                        I just finished building 2 of these ships. Over the past 3 weeks but have not begun paiting. I am currently waiting for the ULAD decals with paint schemes for the specific ships.  My question if anyone could help is what is the best way to weather the uboats. I noticed many give the rust affect, is that airbrushed, or is that hand painted. Any help would be appreicated.

                        I brush paint mine on. I paint the rust on after I put the gloss coat on for the decals. That way I can wipe it away if I make a mistake. I use oil colors too. Burnt sienna, raw sienna and burnt umber. It takes very little paint.

                           My personal choice is using pastels. Experiment with yellow pastels and red brown. Apply a dab of yellow and smear it down. Then add a smaller amount of red brown on top of it and smear it down. With a little practice you'll have rust that's very convincing. If you make a mistake, just use a moist paper towel and start over. HTH. If the images don't show, just download the properties.

                        Hey great. I never considered doing that. I think the weathering effect on the uboats is one of the funnest parts when doing these models. I just want to make sure that when I do it, that it look believable.  Thanks for the tips guys I really apprecite it.

                        Leftie - beautiful build, really nice weathering, very impressive. The water effect is intriguign! At first glance like a photo of a boat in the water...but I'm suspecting glossy foil? Tell us more!

                             The water is plain old kitchen foil. Its a trick I learn from Scale Modeler in the '60s. I photographed the model outside with a blue backdrop. I could have done a better job with the water effect but it was a windy day and I was afraid the backdrop would fall on my U boat...so I was a bit in a hurry. HTH

                            P.S. Great kit...even with its flaws.

                        Great build and I love that foil/water effect!    Thanks for the info on replicating rust with the brown over yellow chalk.  It really does look realistic as well as subtle.
