1/72 Revell Type VIIC-41
Posted by old soldier on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 6:38 PM

Well I just receved my 1/72 Revell Type VIIC-41 today at about 1800. The hull is the same one that is on the first U-Boot with very little change to it, well from what I can see.Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

I also see that Italeri from Italy is comming out with an ELCO80 ' Torpedo Boat PT-596 in 1/35.

Description: Patrol torpedo boats (PT boats) were versatile light attack vessels originally intended as anti-shipping weapons but often adapted to gun boat configurations and rescue duties. The wooden hulled craft were small, fast and well armed with a wide variety of weapons often modified in the field. The kit features an Elco 80' model (Electric Boat Company, 80' long x 20' 8" beam); the most numerous and largest variety built for the US Navy. PT-596 was an example of mid-war heavily armed boats posted to the South Pacific. The boat hosted an impressive array of weapons, including a single 40mm Bofors gun, a 37mm canon, 20mm Oerlicon, two twin 50 caliber machine guns, (4) MK-13 torpedoes and 5" rocket launchers. The finished model is over 27" long.

Can be preordered from Squadron for a stiff price of 134.98

hey old soldier-

did you order yours from Squadron?

overall, what's your impression?  Also, if you have the "original" Type VII, how's it compare?

thanks,

Sam

Yep, got it from Squadron. Well have not really looked at it, just looked at the hull. It is packed the same as the  "original" Type VII and the instructions book is thicker. Will start the build after I get the paint for it, maybe in the next week or two.

Actually Old Soldier?

PT-596 was more late war than mid-war, she was shipped to the Philippines but her and her squadron-sisters did not see any action.  I realize you're not saying that, but I thought I'd add my two cents worth, ...

got mine in the mail yesterday...haven't had a whole lot of time to go over the kit, but I'm sure the aftermarket guys are going to be happy.

couple things I noticed:

-hull sections were better protected for shipping.  My two earlier models both had minor damage at the bow.  Nothing broken on this one (so far- I still need to check railings...)

- same basic periscope pedestal and UZO as the earlier version.  I think the UZO is still in the wrong location in the CT floor, but I need to check that more carefully.

- same oversized scopes.

- decals and painting instructions for about 6 different boats.

- hull has the more raked bow profile than the earlier model.

Squadron had it to me in 3 days..

I'm curious as to how high this boat is? From the top of the mast to the bottom of the base, I'm looking to either build a case or have one made and I would some help on the dimensions. Thanks all
