A Fletcher Class For Jeff Herne
Posted by wayne baker on Friday, March 31, 2006 3:40 PM

Jeff,  saw in another post theat you like Fketcher Class destroyers.  I saw this at the Palm Springs Air Museum.  I don't know who made it, didn't look, or the scale, but you can see it is big.  This is one of 5 model ships they had on display.  The others were a heavy cruiser,  An Iowa class battleship, the Lexington around the Coral Sea time, and a Gato class submarine.  They were all similar scale.

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Didn't shoot the Lex, just the cruiser.

I'll go through my photos at home, I have shot some pics of the Lady Lex at the PS museum. If I can't find them I will shoot a lot of them this summer when we go back.

DD 537 ... that would be The Sullivans in her wartime livery.  What is that scheme, Jeff, Measure 21?  The cruiser is San Francisco before the war .....

The two-toned camouflage, Haze Gray over Navy Blue,  on the destroyer is Measure 22.   Measure 21 is overall Navy Blue

OK well I can't find the photos from the PS Museum but I did find 2 shots of the model of the USS Gambier Bay that is on display on the USS Midway down in San Diego. I will shoot pics of all the models at the Palm Springs Air Museum when we are at our timeshare there this June.

Fine Art Models lists a 1:96 scale USS Nicholas for $10,500 USD.

That's my next large-scale project. Probably do a fiberglass hull though, and build it over a period of years, as I can afford the fittings!

I'm a Gearing guy, myself ... pre-FRAM.  My dad served on Forrest Royal, William C. Lawe and Theodore E. Chadler, so I got to go on a few short trips with him when I was a kid.  I have tons of his photos and cruise books, including the Korean War.  As you all know, the Sumner/Gearings were built on Fletcher hulls and up-gunned, although they had a notoriously wet bow in heavy seas.  But I loves 'em ... last of the all-gun tin cans .....

That's not to say the Fletchers lack a long and storied career ... especially with actions like Taffy III off Samar Island.  That would make on helluvva movie!
