"HMS Surprise" aka Jolly Roger
Posted by The Ferg Dog on Monday, April 3, 2006 8:33 PM

Shipmates:

I am currently working on a kit bash /converstion of the Lindberg Jolly Roger to the "movie" HMS Surprise. There are a lot ,and I mean a LOT of questions concerning the "correct" rendition of the ship. There are different descrptions to choose from. If one watches the movie closely you will see differances in the "ship". That is because they had the real ship, the converted HMS Rose. Then there was the "tank" ship. And there were two different "sound stage" "ships". Main deck and Gun deck. I drove my self nuts trying to decide what ship was the correct ship. Then I got a light bulb moment. I am building this kit to my abilties and what I see . I have read the description of the Surprise in the novels. It seems to me to be the best atirubutes of two actual ships named Surprise. (The Royal Navy had 4 HMS Surprise's, (Historical note the 4th HMS Surprise was a cut down double decker ,I do not remember if it was a 64 or a 74, to a single deck "44".This was the ship that Francis Scott Key was "detained " on when he was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner") This is my frist ship so I am learning as I go along. By the way Mr.Bill Luther is a NA. He is an outstanding friend. He is the one who turned me to this project. The Jolly can be made into the HMS Surprise, and you have plenty of leeway.

Shipmates:

I have not figured out how to post pictures on FSM Forum. I am not a computer wizard. I have posted pictures on the model ship gallery.

http://www.modelhipgallery.com/gallery/index-gallery.html

The pictures I posted ( ok I asked the Mrs. to do it) are on the main gallery around number 212. I took the pictures,I washed out a lot of the detail some how. I took some with a flash and some with out a flash. I stilled managed to mess it up. I am not a fan of the computer age. I must admit that these ship model sites and the feedback I get form all of you has been outstanding. The exchange of knowledge is help. When I see the work of others it only makes me want to work harder to do the same caliber of work as I see from others.

Corrections:

Thanks for the quick e mails on my typing skills. Yes I did type the site address wrong. It should be :

         http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/index-galley.html

The rest of the information is correct. ( and as to having typing lessons, not today.)
