Atlantic model from Ideal
Posted by armchair sailor on Thursday, April 27, 2006 12:49 PM

This can be a subject all in itself concerning the Atlantic . Mr. Tilley and I  were having a discussion in the " What makes the color Teak " about the yacht Atlantic and I recieved some interesting information on the final disposition of the ships remains. I live on the west coast ( Oregun , not O-re-gone to you easterners !) and photos or other information is scarce to get ahold of. Is there a web-site for photos of the ship in her glory days and possibly of her demise ?

As I mentioned in the Teak article, I have the old Ideal model of the Atlantic and i would like to restore it for my brother would originally built it in the late 50`s. It`s a little battered and broken up and pieces are missing and  finding plans is fairly difficult but I have a good hull and deck, just need some good photos, etc to start. Does anyone else have this kit ? Let`s see some photos, if you can............. I`d love to see them.

I've never done any serious research about this ship.  I remember that the museum where I used to work (the Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia) had some photos of her in the library.  I guess it's still possible to buy photographic prints from the MM, but the prices nowadays are outrageous.  The National Maritime Museum at San Francisco has a nice photo collection; maybe the people there could help.

I think there are a few pictures of her in one of the volumes of the Time-Life Books series, The Seafarers.  I'll see if I can find them.

Bluejacket (www.bluejacketinc.com) makes a solid-wood-hull Atlantic kit and, I believe, sells the plans separately.  They might contain all the information you need.

That doesn't help much, I'm afraid.  I'll try to think of something else.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

There just doesn`t seem to be alot out there. I`ve looked at books on yachts and it`s hardly ever been mentioned. I know the Ideal kit was re-released by Glencoe a few years ago but I never saw it in the hobby stores or magazines. This ship did set a record and it just doesn`t seem to matter. Some day, it will get it`s just desserts but for now, nothing. I did get a postcard at a craft store, believe it or not, but that was a bows on shot and it`s hard to pick out details. It would be nice to see some deck shots but alas, I`ll have to wait. I think I will try to order the plans from Bluejacket. I`m glad you mentioned them because I had forgotten that they had released a kit of then Atlantic a few years ago.

For the history of the yacht, there is an excellent book titled 'Atlantic' by Scott Cookman which describes the background and transatlantic race for the 'Kaiser's Cup' in 1905. The book is loaded with photos but unfortunately, they aren't that good for modeling reference.

The Atlantic was used for a while by either the Coast Guard or Navy, there should be some info in one of their 'ships of...' books. I won't be back into the library until Wed., but I can check then.

I have the kit and instructions, as well as some color pics of a larger 'Atlantic' model that was for sale in an internet gallery about five years ago.

E-mail me your e-mail address (click e-mail below) and I'll send you scans.

Alan Kemp
