A few decent finds on Ebay
Posted by Big Jake on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 9:13 AM

I was going through ebay and came across these, By the shipping on the Chebec, is just plain wrong, greedy bums, if they want to sell it for a base price then just do so. But one of us on the BB might still want to add it to the collection.

This one find is not bad on the shipping and you get 4 great models

That batch lot of four has the potential to be one of the bigger bargains I've seen in years.  The Reale, in my opinion, is one of Heller's best kits ever - a real masterpiece that, carefully built, painted, and rigged, would be downright spectacular.  The Pamir and Amerigo Vespucci aren't bad either.  With all the complicated deck gear (Jarvis brace winches, for example) they present some major problems for the manufacturers on such a small scale, but in general Heller did about as good a job with them as could be expected.  The "Corona," I think, is one of those early kits from Heller's "let's-see-how-many-times-we-can-recycle-the-same-hull" period.  It doesn't look much like anything that ever floated.  But it would be a useful contribution to a spare parts box - and if the bidding doesn't go into the hundreds of dollars, it could be regarded as a throw-in freebie.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

$60 for shipping within the U.S.?!  Thats outrageous!  How heavy can the damn thing be?  I had a Trump 1/350 North Carolina sent from Hong Kong for less than 20 bucks!

Thats the rub!  they are over charging you for shipping.  I wonder if anyone has sued Ebay for false shipping charges. It does not say shipping and HANDLING, just shipping.

About 10 years ago JC Penney Catalog services was sued and had to issue refunds of shipping charges as they were charging too much and keeping the difference.  A customer noticed the postage on her package was only so much where JCP charged almost double.  They got busted.

I wonder if they same thing could happen through ebay?

Big Jake,

FYI, the shipping charges are entirely up to the seller, EBAY merely posts the info. $60 shipping on that kit is totally out of line and that seller will probably get some negative feedback on their record that will hurt their sales in the future.

I stop in the local cafe now and then just to see what I've been up to.

Actually, excessive shipping charges are (theoretically) not allowed by eBay, it's called "fee avoidance". As eBay charges sellers more for setting a higher starting bid price for their items, some sellers try to get around this by increasing the shipping charges (which eBay doesn't charge for), effectively setting a "hidden" minimum price for their item.
Though this is against eBay regulations, it doesn't seem to be enforced very well as there are usually plenty of items with inflated shipping charges, particularly from China and Hong Kong.

What I do when I find an outrageous postage amount is send the seller a message. I tell them That I am an interested buyer but do to their overchaging of shipping rates I will take a pass on their auction in favor of better rates.

If enough people kept doing this they would get the message and lower their fees. Lets face it there isn't anything on EBay that I HAVE to have. If I can go to an e retailer from their site and get not only a lower price but free shipping why would I deal with EBay?

Recently I was looking for a Dumas Jolly Jay. I found a dealer on EBay that stated he had the lowest prices on the internet. His price was $103.00 US plus $7.99 shipping. I did a quick google search and found a site that offered the same kit for $98.00 US and $7.99 shipping. I contacted the EBay dealer and told them so. I received an e mail that said he had lowered his price to beat that dealer with the same shipping.

So messaging does have results. It just needs the masses to follow through to do it.
