Heller HMS Victory

Thanks to you Big Jake for the insight on the outer jibboom on the Victory. I saw some bamboo skewers in the grocery store the other day that look like just the thing to use if they are strong enough. I am going to buy a pack of them and see what develops. I also built the Constitution some time back and gave it to a relative for his den. It was a very good model but he sold his house and I have no idea what happened to it after that. I wish I had kept it but........

I have used wood, and I even used metal one time when I could not get the dowel just right. I have written model ship building articles that are posted on Naplaks Model site

The article on the USS Constitution I can email you directly. I also tell the readers to use a wooden dowel to replace the far end on the Jib Boom on that model as well. You might want to check the 3 top mast as it was true to scale but very soft and weak. I replaced mine with wood also.

I am at the point in building the Victory where I will be starting the rigging soon. From looking at pictures of other models it looks like the plastic jib boom is too flimsy to use. When I get to that point I am going to try and make one out of wood so it will be stronger and be able to take the rigging without bending.

Has anyone used the plastic one and if so how did it work out.

Big Jake...with five under your belt you may have some advise on this.

I just ordered the Heller Solie' Royal In 1/96 from Model expo. they have them on sale for 55.00 plus shipping. I'm slowly gettign the entire collection of the big ships.

Got to love that beast, I got one last summer and I to am also afraid to build it! I also have the Heller Solier Royal In 1/96, beleive it or not it has even mo]re parts that the Victory [:0](2300)or so. I will email the title of an excellent book on period rigging when I get home.

Wow, Jake! Those shots are fantastic. Thank you for sharing them with me, and thanks for the tip on the ejector pins. I was wondering how visible they'd be once the decks and fittings got installed.

I'll let you know once I start working seriously on this thing. Never enough time (or room) for it, it seems.

I have built the HMS Victory several times (5) for my clients. I consider it one of the best ever made. The ejector pin marks you speak of are well hidden once you place the belaying pin racks on the bulkhead spaces. The hull corrosion is really easy and the grains of the deck can be made to be seen, take a look at the deck of the model i have posted in the link below.

Well, it's a fairly old kit by today's standards you know... The big ejector pin marks, you either get rid of them with your mini-drill and sanding bits (for those that are raised) or you fill them up with Milliput (for those that are recessed).

My best advice though is to get Steven Biesty's 'Incredible Cross-Section' book about the Man-of-War (probably at your local library, in the kids section). Tons of info and details are packed in that book!
