Monopoly Game pre-dreadnought?
Posted by Gerarddm on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 10:24 PM
Hey- here's an odd question- one of the set pieces in Monopoly is a pre-dreadnought. What real ship comes closest to it, if any? For that matter, is that field cannon set piece a French 75?

Actually we had an interesting discussion about this very topic here in the Forum last fall.  Here's the thread:  http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/520727/ShowPost.aspx

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

And thank you Mr Tilley. Very interesting thread, and I come away agreeing with the thread's conclusion that the pre-dreadnought IOWA was the inspiration.

A while ago on the Modelwarships.com forums, someone "superdetailed" the Monopoly ship with PE railings, brass wire gun barrels, etc. Can't remember the exact thread but it was quite amusing! Probably searching for "monopoly" on the www.modelwarships.com forum will find it.

Another pre-dreadnought which has become part of popular culture  (though probably not well-known in the US, I'm not even sure if the matches are sold here in the UK anymore) is HMS Devastation, which appears on boxes of "England's Glory" matches.

I did a search on MW and drew a blank. I do remember it though, completley decked out, buff and white paint scheme. I might give it a try.......

I did a search and it seems like the topic in question has been deleted, probably due to its age.
It was linked to in a thread on the French pre-dreadnought Jaureguiberry, which has more than a passing resemblance to the Monopoly ship!

Here's the "England's Glory" matchbox ship: (Took me quite a while to find a link)
