NIMITZ CLASS AIR CRAFT CARRIER

HELP WITH BUILDING OUR FIRST MODEL

My 11 1/2 year old grandson and I and going to be having a tour aboard the USS John Stennis which is stationed at Naval Station North Island in San Diego.

We have order an Italeri - USS John Stennis 1/720 to build. This is the first model that we are building. We have several questions that we would like to ask, to help us identify some of the parts of the model.

We have additional questions about painting the model.

If we can find someone who has built an Italeri air craft carrier model, we would like to be able to ask that person some questions. We would also like to e-mail them some scanned copies of the plans to help ask the questions

In addition to posting your reply to this group, would you please send me a cc e-mail to lpsca@earthlink.net

Thanks!]

Larry,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your experience here at FSM.

In answer to your question, yes, I have built a few carriers. The last Italeri one I built was the USS Kitty Hawk. As for Nimitz class, I was stationed on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower for 4 years, and during that time spent quite a few days working with the Stennis and her crew before she went to San Diego. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on this forum, or at my e-mail address listed in my profile. I would be more than pleased to help in any way that I can.

Best of luck with the build.

I am a little confused.

I am new to this group and posted my first message on August 15.

Thirty-six (36) people read the posting, but only one (1) person responded.

I do not understand why only one (1) person responded. All we requested was help in identify some of the parts and help in painting the parts.

Can anyone tell me how I can post a better message and hopefully get some additional help?

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you, Larry.

In answer to the forum, you have to understand that not everybody is comfortable with every subject. The questions that you're asking are valid and logical, but very few people honestly know the answers to those questions. I myself have posted several topics on here with no reply, even if the subject was fairly common. Please do not get discouraged if a post is not replied to immediately. Some of us on here check the forums multiple times per day, others barely once per week. It's just the nature of the forum.

BTW send any information you want answered about the build to dsvandeman@sbcglobal.net

Larry,

You have e-mail...

Since I don't build modern ships, I can't offer much assistance, but stop by Modelwarships.com and someone will be sure to help you out.

Larry,

I am currently building this kit, and I was stationed on the ship for 2.5 years starting in '95. I have some insight to the challenges/shortcomings with this kit. It is a good starting point, though, and is a nice and challenging kit for building together with your grandson.

When is your tour? One of the shortcomings with Nimitz ships is detail photos - take many if you have the chance, especially of the obscure areas (fantail, weapons platforms, etc). Of course, feel free to share any photos you take! ;-)

Let me know of your specific questions. You can reach me here or at lentzf@aol.com. And best of luck!
