What else can you tell us about it, Shipmate?  What's the story?

Well I found it one this webs site.  I also found out the ships name is the "Golden State" but I still dont know who painted it.  If I could find a copy that would be great!

Thanks!

I can't recall having seen the picture before, but it looks like the work of either Jack Spurling or (more likely) Montague Dawson.

The hull of the ship in the foreground appears (though it's not a hundred percent obvious on my monitor) to be green.  If so, that increases the likelihood that it's the Thermopylae.  (Several other tea clippers also had green hulls, though.)  The rig, with double topsails, single topgallants, and no skysails, is also consistent with that identification.

What else can you tell us about it, Shipmate?  What's the story?

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Boy sure looks it. *Thermopylae

Talking about evocative prints of clippers under sail, in Frank O. Braynard's book Famous American Ships he does pen and ink drawings of each ship he talks about... the stately, graphic image of James Baines and the swooping, powerful Flying Cloud with all studding sails set ( which reminds me of this Cutty Sark painting ) particularly come to mind.

This is a great resource book to help choose subject matter to model, IMHO.
