Matchbox San Diego CL-53 (Atlanta class)?  Matchbox did a heavy cruiser but it was the Indianapolis (CA-35).  Both were in 1/700 scale

Yes and no <g>.  I had picked up a couple of CL(AA)-53's, and at least one Indy thinking to kitbash a Portland or Northhampton.  Intentions can be tough that way <g>.

Just couldn't remember an SF, but could not, not remember either.

Loose Cannon has announced the availability of a conversion set to convert the Tamiya Indianapolis to the Portland.    The set is available right now and is being sold at the IPMS Nats in Kansas City

A little off topic but I've built the Tamiya 1/700 USS Indianapolis...I was just wondering if this kit is out there somewhere in a larger scale. I'm really fascinated with the story of her sinking, and how those men spent days out in the open Pacific.  

There is a 1:350 scale resin & brass kit of the USS Indianapolis by Iron Shipwright.

To my knowledge, there is not a styrene kit of the Indianapolis in one of the larger scales, although there have been wishful thinking rumbles every year.

If you really want a large size model you can get a fiberglass R/C hull and scratchbuild the superstructure & details

These are great pictures. They look like they came from a cruise book.

My father was on the San Francisco too, from late '41 (pre-Pearl Harbor) to mid-'44 (Truk).

I remember that he had some pictures of when they crossed the equator in '42, and a photo-copy of the PUC, but all of his pictures from his Navy days disappeared  when the house was cleaned out.

For some reason, he never got a cruise book from any of the ships he was on ('40-'60). Is this one available online?
