Ships of Barbary Corsairs
Posted by kapudan_emir_effendi on Monday, August 7, 2006 6:19 AM
Hello,

You may have heard, at the peak of their glory in 1620s and 30s, corsairs of barbary states were raiding south english, cornish and irish coasts regularly. One particular, Murad Reis (renegade dutch privateer Jan Jansz van Haarlem) sacked Iceland in 1631 and on the return leg of this campaign, visited Virginian shores too. His son, born of a moroccan princess, moved to New Amsterdam (a.k.a New York Big Smile [:D]) later in the century and his descendants still live there today. Murad Reis was able to undertake this fascinating enterprise by using square rigged ships. I now wander what kind of ships he may have used. Presumably small galleons or pinnaces not unlike Golden Hind or Mayflower. If I should be approved or disapproved by expert scholars in the forum however, I would be more sure of my knowledge.

best wishes
