Midship Models USS Gridley, what?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 10, 2006 3:23 PM

From everything I'd read about the Gridley kit from Midship Models,  I thought I'd encounter a great little kit.  The fit of some of the bridge parts is god awful.

Anyone else here built this or the sister kits? What's been your thoughts on it?

I am just gassed at the mismatch of some of the key parts in the early stages of this kit. Parts A27  & A28 do not meet the rear of the superstructure's base (part A8).  I always test fit first.  Good thing,  becouse I had to add a shim of plastic sheet to make 'er reach the base,  and then run a bead of gap filling CA between and sand it smooth to get a prominent error  in the kit to look decent.  And I also had to remove the guide that's molded on to the deck (part A41) for aligning these two parts onto the deck-  there was a resulting 3mm gap if you chose to use the guides?  That's misguided!  I'm up to the challenge to do it right-  but I'm really surprised given all the glowing reviews these kits got!?Shock [:O]  This stuff was never mentioned.  So much for out of the box reviews......

People seem to have gone to great lengths to not say anything bad in the reviews of these kits.  I experienced the problems you describe.  My solution was to completely remove the locating marks on the decks.

If you haven't gotten to the torpedo tubes yet, be sure to dry fit these also.

For the locating lines, my impression is that they were laid out with the expectation that the wall thickness of superstructure parts and TT mounts would be considerably thinner.

Also, the length of the 5" gun barrels was gross.  When I asked Chris Decker about this, he said that we can aways trim the part to the correct size.

If you feel like going to a little extra effort, you will also find that there is a deck section missing just aft of the break of the fo'c'sle, at the 01 level.

If you build the Benham class, be prepared to do some major correction on the stack

The main gun director is grossly small.  I skinned it with sheet plastic on three sides and the bottom.  Would have been easier with a scratch-built effort.

I was delighted with the subject matter and prepared for a less-than perfect start from a small manufacturer.  They were a LOT less than perfect, but still a place to start from.

Hey, thanks Rick.  I was wondering what was going on.  It seems to me that no one has ever mentioned this stuff.   I do know that these kits were long delayed becouse of molding problems that Chris had with the original manufacturer.  I believe that he had to start all over again as a result,  and had to go after the original manufacturer for losses incurred as a result.  It hard to imagine that this issue was an improvement over the old test runs.  With some corrective measures,  it should all work out and look decent when finished.  Thank goodness!  Big Smile [:D]
