revell 50th (new) releases.

Picked up the revell 'Oriana' and the 'Chris craft fishing boat today in Warsaw. Bit of a nostalgia trip as the shop also had a stack of old FSM's from the late 80's and early 90's.

Boy has FSM changed,FOR the better I might add. Also the kit prices made me cry,who said inflation!!

Anyway the kits...Oriana is surprisingly well detailed, even if a few of those details do not match the actual ship.Moulded in railing but thats to be expected. All in all,at 20" a good basis to start from and lets face it we are not likely to get a better one.

The Chris-craft looks to be a bit more work but again if you put in the effort it could be something. No cabin detail but you get clear sheet for windows and paper cutouts for blinds?? I think large size P/E rail might make a good substitute.A couple of intrepid fishermen for crew but they look like they have been lost in the bermuda triangle since the 60's.maybe 1/48th figures with some surgery could substitute. You get the fishing rods so all you need is a 1/50th scale Marlin to make a really cool diorama for your den down on the Florida keys.

Not ship related but the sister kit of the 747 looks to be an interesting build as well. With full interior.A scratch builders dream...

The shop owner,a german guy who drives over the border to get stuff early said all the 50th birthday kits were going like hot-cakes,so if you want them....get them quick.....

PS.... They are worth buying for the boxes alone.Exact reproduction of the originals. The 50th birthday logo is on a cardboard strap wrapped around the box so as to not detract from the frameable artwork.

I wouldn't be surprised if, in a year or so's time, the re-issued Revell kits will be fetching nearly the same price on eBay that the originals did before the reissue.
See this Airfix DH-88 Comet for an example. I remember buying one of these (in the exact same box) for £2.99 in a local hobby shop only a few years ago. Sigh [sigh] It's a very old and clunky mould (1950s vintage) too, requiring a lot of sanding, filling and scratchbuilding.
Another example is the 1990s re-issue of Cousteau's Calypso which usually goes for nearly as high prices as a vintage 1970s example (presumably because most of the potential buyers are builders, not collectors).

Anyway, I can't find these Revell kits in any local shops, so have bought the fishing boat, USS Currituck (luckily I found a trader who was selling these seperately, as it's the only one in the set I really wanted) and Tradewind aircraft (1/144 planes are another of my modelling interests) from an eBay seller. The (current!) prices of all the Revell re-issues seem very reasonable; the fishing boat/Chris Craft cruiser is only £6.99 for example. (Compared to 2006 prices, anyway, not 1960s ones...)
