APD conversion set in 1/700
Posted by jepot on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 6:38 AM

Folks,

Does anyone know of a conversion kit of a Buckley class DE to an APD in 1:700 scale? I know there is for 1:350 but what about the smaller ( Skywave) kit?

thanks!

Niko Models makes a 1:700 scale resin & brass DE APD.  Price is 34.95 Euros at L'Arsenal

http://www.larsenal.com/GB/catalogue/Resines/niko.php

Its should also be available in the States from Pacific Front Hobbies.

Classic Warships made a 1:700 scale resin DE APD.   Classic has gone out of the ship model production business, focusing on book publications instead.   But Steve Wiper of Classic did sell his masters to Chris Decker of Midship Models.  The 1:700 kits will be sold under the Misdhip brand and the 1:350 kits will be sold under the Yankee Modelworks label.   I don't believe that the APD is in production yet -- they're just getting the WARD out the door.  You may be able to find one ot these kits on Ebay

Not as costly as you think.   Let me run some numbers past you as an example.   They are based on kit MSRP and todays exchange rates.  Your milage may vary:

PitRoad Vehicles on Beachead (for LCVPs)  600 Y  =>  $5.10 USD

PitRoad Buckley DE                                   1600 Y  =>  $13.60 USD

Toms Modelworks DD PE                                              $  8.00 USD

                              or

Gold Medal Cruiser/DD PE                                            $ 20.00 USD

Styrene stock  (sheet & rod)                                           $10.00 USD (estimate)

Total                                                                 $36.70   to  $48.70 (plus research material & time)

Versus

NIKO DE APD                                     34.95 Euros    =>  $44.95 USD (complete, structures & PE)

So, you can see that if you start with the basic kits and build your own APD,  your cost is in the same order of magnitude as if you go out and buy the complete kit from Niko.   Oh, and you still have to scratchbuild the boat handling mast from styrene stock if you go the piece part route.

Mirage are planning a 1/400 APD as part of their new range of "four-stacker" destroyer kits. No idea when these kits will be released, however, as they were announced at least a year ago and there's still no sign of them.

This is a completely different ship to the Buckley-based APD (it's based on the Wickes-class destroyer hull) but still might be of interest to anyone interested in modelling this type of vessel.

Mirage announced the impending release of their 4-pipe destroyer series at least 3 years ago.   Still waiting ... {sound of foot tapping}

Niko also makes a 4-pipe APD, as the WARD in her as-lost configuration ...

Classic Warships also made a WARD in her APD configureation (1:700 scale).

Iron Shipwright makes a 1:350 scale 4-pipe APD as the Roper in resin & brass.

Thanks for the  analysis sir! Its a very scientific way of analysing the eventual costs involved in either route to come up with an APD sir...now if there was also a kit or conversion of the Edsall DE and further into a DER type....

Regards...
