Cutty Sark - Production time
Posted by Shipwreck on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 12:00 PM
Shalom List,

Several of us are working on Revell's Cutty Sark and or the USS Constitution, and similar ships. Most of us may be doing our modeling in our spare time - maybe with a one to two year production window. Using the Cutty Sark as an example, how many hours would it take to produce one of those plastic kits from start to finish?

I think it would be interesting to get some responses from the average builder (actually, I think all of you are above average) and some professional builder's response.

And do most of your work on one project at a time?

Thankyou for sharing your modeling experience.

I just mentioned on another thread that it took me 41.25 hours to complete a Revell 1/146 Victory. Thinking about the models you mention it would be resonable to guesstimate about six times as long or 250 hrs. I'm not sure if your'e hobby'in that one would really want to keep track of the time, but it seems that's what people always want to know or makea comment such as "whoa!!! that dudes got way too much time on his hands" One of the things we need to think about is "play value" . Considering the cost of a big kit,the play vaue is pretty cheap say compared to video games or watching TV.

I averaged about 3hrs a day for 5months on my 1/96 Constitution under full sail building it out of the box except for the shrouds, and ratlines. It really depends on how far you want to take it..i could easily of doubled my time had i done the things i wanted to do. I imagine the Cutty Sark would be comparable.

Thanks for the reply Reklein,

I went back to the pro builders thread and read your post. Such a deal! How many get to enjoy their hobby and still get paid for it. At two dollars an hour it is a free hobby, plus some!

Anyhow, I have been out of modeling for about 45 years, except a WWII glider I did for my father. I am wondering how much time it will take me to do a Cutty Sark. Then I am curious as to how long it would take a pro builder to do the same thing.

I just recently finished the Revell 1:96 Cutty Sark.  It was a straight from the box build except for some changes to the paint scheme to make it more representative of the actual vessel.   I averaged around 1.5 hours per day over approximately 6 months, so that's around 270 or so hours.   It was a very satisfying build too...

I think its a good question actually.

How long does it take to put one of these together.

Of course it is what you want to put into it but, having an idea of how long it will take will give a better perspective on how to start it, when to start it and how much time you will be taking away from other things. (family, other projects, etc)

I just bought one and I know it will take a few months at least and I also know that I need some more experience with ships before I attempt it.

We should start a Cutty Sark suppot group. : )

With the ones I have built, it took about a month to assemble the model itself, yet I plan on about five months at least on the rigging.  This model deserves to be rigged to the fullest extent.
