No problem, I'm happy to help. And please do post photos of the diorama when it's done.

I love ANYTHING USCG!

Good luck!

And there is a company out of Australia who makes decals for both the Jayhawk & Dauphin in Coast Guard servce.    I don't have the URL, but if you post a request on the aircraft and helo pages someone is sure to have that info

Not necessarily, you could use this conversion kit. It all depends on whether you want to go for the $45.00 or put in the time scratch building.

Sounds like the recently re-released Revell Sport Fisherman would be a good choice- it is close to the scale you want, and Civilian boat that would make a good subject for a rescue scene.  Plus, it is inexpensive, so you can chop it up as needed with worrying about trashing an expensive kit......

A Coast Guard rescue dio in 1:48 scale?  Sounds like you're planning to use the boat as the base for a dio featuring the Trumpter HH-65 Dolphin doing a hoist.  The nose of the helo should be pointing into the wind/sea direction for the hoist.  You can do a search of the photo album at Fred's Place for pictures to help.

Quartermaster is still in business, most of his items can be purchased from Loyalhanna Dockyard . The Scale Shipyard has some fiberglass hulls in 1:48 scale - ranging from 100" tugs to FLETCHER Class DDs.  MicroGlass also has some 1:48 fiberglass hulls avaiable, but most of their hulls are 1:32 scale.  MicroGlass has a 10" dinghy hull, in 1:32 scale that's 3 & 3/4" long and sells for $4.95.  Their 1:48 scale line is a 26' USN motor whaleboat (6 & 3/8" loa, $12.95); a 78' Great Lakes tugboat (19.5" loa, $59.95); and the 80' Elco PT boat (20" loa, $59.95).

1/48 scale is O scale. The O scale market is predominantly geared to the Lionel trains market, and is rarely exact scale, or well detailed .We are currently developing a laser cut micro plywood kit of a 38' cabin cruiser in 1/87 scale. We're looking at having the first build done for Trainfest, in Milwaukee, with availability sometime in mid 2007. This kit will first be rescaled for Z, and N, and later for S, and O, as the market indicates.

Lead me not into temptation ..................I can find it myself

If you're looking for a small rowing boat, I think these are only available from specialist resin manufacturers, though you might be able to use a "ship's boat" from one of the aforementioned kits! I think Billing Boats (and other manufacturers?) also produce plastic rowing boats as part of their accessory range.

Or check the model railroad catalogs for scenery details in O or S guage.    Both are close to 1:48 scale.

A company called Quartermaster makes [made] some 1:48 scale ship detail items.   I have a 1:48 scale LCVP up somewhere in the stash.   Quartermaster doesn't have a presence on the web.

What sort of boat are you looking for? A small wooden rowing boat, or a larger motor vessel? Civilian or military? (I assume by "boat" you're referring to a small vessel, and not a large ship)

There are very few 1/48 boat kits available in injection-moulded plastic, and most of these are military landing craft (HobbyBoss have just released a LCM-3) but there are quite a few "box-scale" kits which are close enough. Revell have recently reissued their "Sports Fishing Boat" in 1/55 scale, which is a Chris Craft cabin cruiser (and could easily be modified to represent a civilian river or sea craft) and Lindberg have produced a number of small motor vessels in 1/60 scale and thereabouts, including a tug, fire boat, tow boat and a number of fishing boats. (though most, or all, of these are now out of production).
If it's a military vessel you're looking for, Revell/Monogram have produced a Vietnam-era PCF Swift Boat and RAG river gunboat in 1/48 scale. Lindberg also made a PT boat and Air Force rescue launch in 1/60.

As for sailing boats, there are a number of yachts in the region of 1/50 scale, including two kits of Polish racing yachts produced by Mirage, both of which are currently widely available.

If you're looking for a small rowing boat, I think these are only available from specialist resin manufacturers, though you might be able to use a "ship's boat" from one of the aforementioned kits! I think Billing Boats (and other manufacturers?) also produce plastic rowing boats as part of their accessory range.
