Scharnhorst paint schemes
Posted by Wolfp on Saturday, August 30, 2003 1:20 PM
anyone know where I can score some paint schemes for the scharnhorst. I may be limited due to the fact, I am looking at the hull and it looks like they have the bow prior to her modification (think its called Atlantic Bow or some such). All sites I have found have tech specs and black and white photos. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Big Smile [:D]

Hreachmack book
Posted by Jeff Herne on Saturday, August 30, 2003 9:32 PM
Don't waste your money on it...it's filled with glaring errors, inaccurate data, and it's obvious that what he didn't know he made up.

When noted naval camouflage expert Alan Raven reviewed the book for Plastic Ship Modeler, this was his closing line, " I read Mr. Hreachmack's book while on the toilet, and after I was finished, put it behind me."

Cruel, yes. Harsh, most definitely. However, Alan Raven, myself, and dozens of other naval history writers, paint chip producers, and paint manufacturers have to spend huge gobs of time trying to correct the inaccuracies that a book like this creates in the modeling and historical community.

If you're looking for Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, or other German capital ship camo patterns, there's enough accurate information on the web, and there's enough people 'in the know' to help you out.

A good reference book for photos is the German Battleships of WW2 by Berger and Koop, available from Schiffer.
