I Feel So Weak and Puny

Man! You guys are amazing. I look through these forums and I see genuine artistic masterpieces. There's a guy building a USS Arizona that's just too phenomenal for words and the PT boat group build is nothing less than mind-boggling. In contrast, my models look like kindergarten projects. Sure, I do as good a job as I possibly can, but I just glue them together and paint them like the manufacturers instructions. You guys with the photo-etched aftermarket upgrades and maniacal attention to the tiniest details are my new idols. Many of you would laugh at my models and some would openly weep but I must sincerely thank you all for spurring me on to a higher level of modeling. I have SO much to learn, but that will be the fun. I wish I'd gotten in on the PT group build. That looks fun, but I'll jump on with another in the future. Maybe a USS Missouri? I might post a lot of stupid and simple newby type questions and I'll probably come off as a complete moron sometimes but I want to build at least one very exquisite model before I take the dirt nap. Ships have always been my favorite so that will be my primary focus. I'd sure appreciate any help you guys can give. Thanks!

Well, there is no reason not to join the PT group build...we still have months to go, certainly long enough to assemble a PT boat, and we would love to see your work!  Hey, this is modeling for fun, all of us could point at some of our kits and laugh...I actually keep a couple of my worst ones on the shelf so I can remind myself that mistakes are human.

Jump on in, you'll find it's a lot easier than you think!

Medric, I agree completely.  I thought I was a pretty good modeler, and then I started reading the forums here and looking at some of the pictures.  Some of the guys here do extremely nice and detailed work.  I thoroughly enjoy this site.

Medric,

I try not to lose sight of the fact that we all have to start somewhere, and, speaking for myself, are still on the journey of improving our skills, and knowledge. I think you have found the right place to learn. Here. While I respect all who are here, there are some who's level of quality is a goal I still have to reach. For the few who feel that my abilities are beyond them, I have no problem being the duty moving target. Build, learn, build better.

Lead me not into temptation ..................I can find it myself

I felt like you just a few months ago when I got back to modeling.  And now, I hear comments about my models that I made to others a while back ago.  This is the place to learn and you'll be impressed by how fast you can learn.  Can't wait to see your work.  And you might help me as well as I never made a ship of my life and one of my next projects is the Tamiya 1/350 Bismarck battleship.  I also ordered a Tom's Modelworks PE set for it.  I'll build this in the Kriegsmarine Group Build if you are interested.

See ya, and don't be shy to ask "dumb" question, you're at the right place.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Wow, Yann Solo, you certainly don't believe in starting small!

And, agreed: "The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked."

You guys are great. I thought that this was some super elite group that I bumbled onto accidentally but I see that all levels of ability and experience are represented. The goal for me is constant improvement. I'll wind up with a few more firecracker targets I'm sure, but I'm also pretty sure that I'll wind up with the occasional model that will surprise me that I built it. Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement. I truly appreciate them.

Hey, man!  It's about YOUR ENJOYMENT, first and foremost.  The reason we've all got into this is for the fun we get out of it.  It's always nice to admire the work of others,  maybe even let their work inspire you.  Never let the awe inspiring photos you see from other modelers be a gauge of your abilities.  Work to your own abilities and know you did the best that you're able to. Time will see  to your skills improving.  THAT'S ALL THERE IS-  the enjoyment.

When someone comes to this forum, it is easy to become intimidated by the beautiful builds that are posted.  You read countless posts about aftermarket parts, 5+ year builds, details that would boggle anyone's mind, and builders who are concerned with historical accuracy to an almost insane level.  When I first started coming here I actually stopped for a while, feeling that I didn't really belong because my builds are 99% from-the-box, with little to no aftermarket parts.  With a full time school schedule, a full time job, 4 kids, and a disability that leaves me in pain 24/7, I neither have the money or the time.  So what I did was sit back and ask myself "Why do I build models?"

This is a question that every modeller needs to ask themselves at one time or another.  For me there are several reasons.  It helps me to forget the pain I feel constantly, I love to paint and build, and my kids love it.  I relax when I build.  There are other builders who build for the detail, the challenge, or the history.  They build for the accuracy, for the look.  But for me, out of the box is just fine.

Yes, it can be intimidating to read and look at what is on the Finescale forum.  But don't let that deter you.  You can find a lot of useful information here that allows you to better your skill.  I know that I will never reach the level of JTilley or BigJake.  Their builds are fantastic and highly detailed and I respect their skill highly.  But I don't really care if I make it to half that level or not.  My boys get wide eyed when they see my builds.  They are tickled to death when I put a finished ship in their room and they're proud to show it off to their friends.  That's all the satisfaction I need.  A brush stroke in the paint, a wrong color, a bad seam...they're going to happen for me.  I'll just do the best I can and be proud regardless.

Find your reason for building and just build.  That's what this hobby is all about.

You know what guys? In August I accidentally wound up in a Hastings store looking for a DVD of "Strange Brew". At the checkout was a magazine display and the September issue of FSM caught my eye. Never even heard of FSM before. Took it home and read every page of it that night. Subscribed the next day. I've always built models off and on for years. But this latest episode has begun to rival my descent into the world of technical ice/rock climbing where I went absolutely ballistic and practically achieved the priesthood. I always go after my interests like a mongoose, pouring myself into them zealously. I feel the flame of modeling heating to critical as I hunt and peck these posts. No earthly force will be able to overcome the madness. Do any of you guys get that blind tunnel vision and almost self destructive devotion to your pursuits? My wife will be glad it's this and no more of the agonizing nights wondering if I really can stay stuck to a sheer vertical precipice and spending a young fortune on a vast amount of gear. "Yes dear, I won't be at the hobby shop too long today".

OK Ed, I'll take the bait. Now back up to the hobby shop to pick up two more Revell PT-109's. I really should avenge myself on the last one I did. It is absolutely hideous in it's glorious ugliness. The black sewing thread for rigging would probably translate up to mooring ropes in scale and JFK would look like Marcel Marceau if brought to life from my painting. Seasick? No, more like sea madness. Now if I can convince the Minister Of The Interior to come down from her high horse and put in some overtime to buy me the digital camera that I so richly deserve then I will be in porcine paradise. But that will be a task to daunt even the most silver tongued, as she is into this pay bills and eat kick at the moment.
