Blocks and Deadeyes
Posted by Grymm on Friday, October 13, 2006 8:38 AM

Okay, I'm going to use the kit-included blocks and deadeyes for my Soleil Royal.  I worked with a few already, and they work just fine.  I've even grooved them myself.  Now, I'm at the point of painting them.  I don't like leaving any natural plastic.  I was going to spray them flat black, then do a light wood dry brush over them to give them a little wear and bring out some detail.  Does this sound about right.  Were they black?  Or just brown with a little lighter brown highlights?

If it were me, I hardly ever use flat black on a model because of the scale effect of black obliterating any detail. I'd use a dark brown, a color I like is Testor's "rubber" its off enough to get away from the dead look of flat black. Some of the polly scale RR colors in their engine blacks are good too. Highlighting them with a lighter brown or a lightened version of the base color is a good idea.

I guess I should have put it in my original post.  I like using flat black because it coats well and takes a dry brush nicely.  As I always do, I then seal it with a clear satin, to get rid of the "dead" look you mentioned.  I'll look into the paints you mentioned.

Thanks,

Try and get hold of Citadel/Games workshop "Chaos Black". Flows and coats beautifully and has a semigloss sheen.

Bill replied ,oh yeah I forgot those gaming colors are terrific. In Moscow ID there's some young guys painting gaming figures with that stuff and they're terrific. They paint thse little figures bare eyed, no magnifiers, and they're really great. Citadel spray primers are really nicce to work with too.

I've used Citadel paints off and on for years.  Before getting back into models, I painted Battletech miniatures and Fantasy pewter figures.  Citadel paints are very pigment heavy and flow excellently.  I had some Chaos Black (used it for Warhammer minis), but ran out and have just been too lazy to go across town to pick some more up.  But yes, I'm in total agreement, Citadel acrylics are probably the best paints around.  Where else can you get "Vomit Green"?  Same goes for the Primers.  So far, Citadel primers are the only primers that allow me to paint in one coat.

Grymm said about citadel paints"where else can you get "vomit green" ". This is a littleoff topic but do you remember from Harry Potter? Bertie Botts every flavor beans? I don't think the beans had a primer though.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Heh.  Actually,  Citadel names their paints for the fantasy miniatures that are retailed.  You'll find the Vomit green, Dwarf Flesh (which makes for a nice tan), and I believe their is a host of goblin colors, not to mention chainmail, and the ubiquitous blood red.

Back on subject, I sprayed a coat of flat black (since it's a spray and my airbrush is on the fritz), then a light drybrush of a light brown mix of my own.  After that I gave all of it a nice coat of satin.  They came out very nice and after tying a few blocks to see how they hold (reference comments on tossing the kit included blocks) I found they work perfectly and have no problems.

And yes, I did also stop by and picked up some Chaos Black for future work....

Another interesting Citadel colour is "Terra cotta" which matches rather closely the reddish colour used on the USS Constitutions gun carriages. In the past year I have become a big fan of the Citadel colour line (despite the rather ghastly names they use: Rotting flesh, Bubonic brown, Snot green etc.).The metallic colours are worth looking into as well.
