They have arrived, on the Revell Germany website you can find the pictures of their new 1/72 Gato sub.

They had one at the Hobby Industry show in Rosemont, last Saturday. I don't know enough about targets....uhhh....submarines to offer a qualified opinion, but it sure looked good to me.

Oh, the target thing?.......I was a tin can sailor.

Looks nice but I wonder what boat it is supposed to be. It doesent appear to represent any particular boat but mixed bag of all the ones on display around the country, not as bad as the old "lionfish" (Which is definately not the Lionfish!) but still disappointing.

I figured as soon as I read "targets" you must have been on a Destroyer!

On its own merit it would make a respectable Bluegill or Cobia.  I would expect to see a number of aftermarket kits for decks, deck guns, flood holes, and coning towers to make a variety of boats.  We'll have to see how many options (if any) come with the kit.

The original print that Revell published doesn't look much like the finished kit.  Could they have a second release in mind?  Of course they do!  I'm sure mine will sit on the shelf for at least a year or two before I gather enough information and aftermarket to start the build. <sigh>

Cobia is only a few hours from me and I agree it could be made into any of the Manitowok boats, unfortunately it has the wrong number of footholds up the side (just ahead of the sail) which jumped out at me. Will be interesting to see what the AM companies do with this.

The Gato is coming with markings for...

SS-245 Cobia

SS-236 Silversides

SS-249 Flasher

SS-215 Growler

I wondering if there will be a couple of different flood hole options?

The boats listed all have different arrangements for the flood holes so there will have to be options.
