USNS Cape Henry
Posted by telsono on Friday, October 27, 2006 1:37 PM

Does anyone have any information on the armaments of this vessel. I want to build it in its civilian and military colors. It was originally one of the "R" class container ships for the Nedlloyd line. Ipex has the kit for the Rotterdam which was one of that class. The others if I can remember included the Rouen and the Rochester.

I used to inspect these vessels coming into the Port of New York during the early 1980's and have fond memories of them.

Yes - here is info about the three Cape H class Ro Ro ships in their RRF Grey existences

I agree that Cape Henry is the one that Imex produces - the Nedlloyd Rouen.  I'm going to build it someday, just don't know when.

As far as any deck-mounted armament, Cape Henry has none.  USNS ships (operated by or for Military Sealift Command) are all civilian manned, with the exception of a small Navy or Military Detachment (MILDET) on some ships.  The only arms I'm aware of that they carry are small firearms.

Cape K class, not Cape H

I believe the USNS Ro-Ro conversion you can make of the Imex NedLloyd Rouen kit is of the Cape K class ships, Cape Knox (T-AKR 5082) and Cape Kennedy (T-AKR 5083), not the Cape H class. The most obvious visual difference is that the H class has the big handling crane for containers on the foredeck, while the K class does not.

Cape Knox is the former NedLloyd Rouen: http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/545082.htm and is homeported in New Orleans. This is a conversion I am interested in doing as well. I have the Imex kit and am now trying to figure out how to make/buy 1/400 scale military vehicles for the deck. Right now I am thinking about converting 1/285 wargame vehicles... a jeep in 1/285 is about the same size as a humvee in 1/400.

And the Cape Knox doesn't have any weaponry on it, either.

Thanks for the replies. Its good to see others with interest in these vessels. I do have a picture of the Nedlloyd Rotterdam near the end of her career as a civilian vessel. This would be after Nedlloyd was bought by HappagLloyd. The stack colors were slightly different then when I knew her.

If I can get access to a good scanner (at work its only black and white) I'll post them. Someone had told me it was the Cape Henry, thanks for the correction.
