In search of pics, drawings for a 12 Meter yacht, Clipper 12 US 32
Posted by stinger on Sunday, November 12, 2006 3:29 PM

Hi all - I'm looking for a source for either drawings or pics for the 12 meter yacht Clipper, 12 US 32. A friend of mine crewed on this boat back in 1980 and I would like to give him a little something to remember it by. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

stinger

Ah, you mean Independence. Clipper is her re-design name.  You could check with the 12 Meter Museum (in Newport?) , or better yet check on old issues of Sail, etc for that era and see what they have.

Thanks Gerard - I had a feeling that it had been renamed. Just curious as to how you knew that. I'll do a search for Independence. If I can find a pic of her when she was still Clipper, it would be best, but I'll take what I can get.

 thanks again,

stinger

You will likely find only topside photos.   The underwater shapes of many current racing yachts are guarded like state secrets.   The designers don't want to share the hull lines with their competitors and possibly yield the fraction of a knot speed differential that their secret design has.

Ed, you are quite right, but in this case it should not apply. Clipper was a contender for the Cup in 1980 so I doubt that the undersides are any big secret these days. I am firstly looking for any pic of her on the water. The drawings request is only as a backup if no pics can be found. Thanks for your reply and interest.
