Airfix & Lifeboats
Posted by stevebagley on Monday, November 20, 2006 8:34 AM

I was at the IPMS-UK Nationals this weekend . Airfix had a stand there under the banner of their new owner Hornby .News is all the moulds are coming back to the UK.A deal has been done with the receivers of Heller , and so far 5 Truckloads have been delivered to Hornby . This company have revitalised their model railway business by identifying their customers as primarily adults  and upgrading the products they offer .Unfortunately they are manufactured in China , but the quality is so good I don't think they could do it in the UK at the price .

They did have on display the test shots for the RNLI Lifeboat in 1/72 scale ,which is being done in co-operation with the RNLI and I must say I was most impressed .It included a lot of fine  interior detail. It's more than likely that US modellers have never heard of these craft and the RNLI ,but this side of the pond they are very highly regarded .Vessel is a high speed offshore rescue craft about 60 feet long. They hope to have this on sale within 3 months. If they could go to offer coastal forces craft to this standard ,it would answer many a prayer . About 40 years ago , I made a kit of an older type of lifeboat made by the Frog company .It was very good , my modelling wasn't, and I always wanted another ago. Never saw it again , rumours were that collectors prices were about £60 .  I saw on a dealers stand at the show a kit  made by the Russian firm ALANGER that looked like a reissue of this old gem ,and on opening the box lo and behold it was . A 1/48 kit of the RNLI Caister Lifeboat for £15 .Only thing missing were the 3 or 4 crew members in oilskins . Lifeboat modellers look out.

This is actually my first post on the Forum ,hope I haven't bored you.

Hornby aquired the Rivarossi line of HO scale trains. The Rivarossi release of the HO C&O H8 Allegheny is one of the best detailed plastic steam loco models on the market. There is hope that Hornby will deliver a quality line of plastic sailing ship kits, reworking, or upgrading the tools, and doing the research before the upgrades.

Thanks for the information Steve and welcome to the forum.

I was hoping the Severn Lifeboat kit would be revived and I look forward to it with great interest.  It'd be nice to see the Nimrod project revived and perhaps another run of TSR2's, but those are for another forum.

I am in the same 'boat' so to speak, with reference to the old Frog Lifeboat, having built it some forty years ago and making a real hash of it (still got it somewhere I think!).  I obtained an original Frog kit a year or so ago, though at a stupid price, just goes to show how much it appealed to me.

I'll keep a lookout for the Alanger kit however.  The lack of the figures is disappointing but it's a great model nonetheless.

Hey Steve

On the contrary, I look forward to anything depicting the RNLI, a great organizatipn. Check out the Lifeboats 24-7 web site, (if you alredy haven't) it's a neat site.  I have an example of the Frog kit, I hope the company re issuing the  old Frog kit is available here in the States. I've got a Triang wind up Oakley lifeboat , and I've built the Waveney lifeboat(metal HO scale). I've got a RNLI cloth print of RNLI boats and the book "Let Not The Deep" a history of the lifeboat service, as well as some RNLI insignia. I look forward to the new Airfix RNLI kit. If I wasn't such a "caveman"(so simple a cave man could do it) I'd post some of my Coast Guard lifeboats on this forum. Cherrio!

Warm regards

Mike M.
