This may sound strange, but could it be a homebuilt signaling or searching device (ala monocular).  I ask for a couple of reasons.  A.   Item doesn't seem to be pointing in the same direction as the 50 cal and B.  Seems to be mounted awfully far back on the weapon.  Just some thoughts.

Errr.... I think I'll go with Al's idea and that it may be something one of the crew stuck on the handles.

Thanks for checking Al.  I showed it to one of the guys in the office here that has worked with .50 cal and he's never seen anything like it either.  If I come across anything I'll be sure to let you know.

Take care and happy holidays!

Greetings Al,

In this photo of PT-109 there is something that appears to be attached to the starboard 50 cal. machine guns.  Do you have any idea what this might be?  You can see it between the heads of the sailor in the white t-shirt standing on the left and the sailor sitting on the chart house next to him.  I've never seen it anywhere else.  Any idea what this is?  A gun sight?

No idea!  Like you, I've never seen anything shaped like that associated with a MK17 mount.  I checked my MK17 manual and there's nothing like that in that specific position.  The ring sight, when fitted, is up at the front of the receiver.  This item seems to be on the trigger extension bars and may be nothing more than something one of the crew tossed up there.
