As a submariner, I guess I'm a little wierd. But some of you come close.

My favotirte music, while building my sub models, is an album called "Out of the Darkness", by  Midnight Syndicate. It's as dark, brooding and threatening as the depths these predators hunted.

With such titles as "Realm of Shadows", "Noctem Aeternus" and "Into the Abyss" it sets just the right mood, for me.

Hmmmmm, , , another song! ! !

While on my delivery route today, I remembered a British movie by the name of "Battle Hell". It's the story of the Modified Black Swan Class sloop H.M.S. Amethyst's heroic fight on the Yangstie River{my Chinese is NOT so good.} on her flight to the sea. In the battle scenes the background music was Wagners "Pilgrims' Chorus from Tannhauser". So my nomination for ship build music is that piece.

If you like Victory at Sea, try finding a copy of the Battle of the Atlantic Suite, by Dave Roylance - pretty good stuff on that album too.

I like Victory at Sea, and a lot of other Movie / Tv soundtracks when building - Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide, The Great Escape, Guns of Navorne.

Ironicaly, one of my favorite albums is a collection of Western Movie and TV thems called "Round Up" - for some reason, it is great workshop music.  The follow up, Happy Trails is really good too.  Wait until you here the theme  from The Magnificent Seven on Round Up - now that is great music.

the boats c.d is full of boating tunes from "jolly mon to take it back, nautical wheeler, etc."

If I listen to anything whilst I build my Victory, it is the sound track of the HMS Victory cd-rom

Stirring renditions by The Band of the Royal Marines playing such  classics as "Hearts of Oak", and "A life on the Ocean wave" Really puts me in the mood, particularly when I reach a tricky bit on the model

If I had a heavy metal band, we would do a version of "Edmund Fitzgerald" Black Sabbath style. I always thought that would be a terrific Black Sabbath song.

Did anybody notice the odd choice of that song being used on one of the floats in the Tournament of Roses Parade? Apparently somebody didn't pay attention to the lyrics when they decided to use it! As my mother put it, "The float was a boat, and so they decided, 'OK, we need a song about a boat! Let's use "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." That's a song about a boat, isn't it?'"

"Whaddya mean 'Who's flying the plane?!' Nobody's flying the plane!"

let's start by saying i have mood music for playing wargames and building models (3D, wooden, and plastic). so here goes.

all types

anything by rimsky-korsakov; russian symphonies; magnificent seven; conan the [fill in the blank]; apollo (brian eno)

ships

movie scores: master and commander; victory at sea vols 1and2; tall ships suite; pirates of the caribbean; sea sounds; tora, tora, tora; sea power (pbs); ghosts of the abyss; the abyss; das boot

armor

movie scores: patton; bridge to far; longest day (compilation of movie title pieces); war (compilation of movie title pieces); the graet escape; band of brothers

air

movie scores: battle of britain; blue max; babylon 5;

when i used to play board wargames face to face not only would we tailor the music to the era (1812 overture, gettysburg, civil war music) we would drink appropriately beer or wine for germans, wine for french, vodka for russians, rum or gin for british, whiskey for americans and civil war). ok i'm a bit wierd but at 55 i can be.

Wow no one got the definative ship tune ,Johnny Horton's "Sink the Bismark".   I built a 1/350th king george V in one sitting, while it played on continuos loop.  I went and hid, whimpering under my dingie for a week...... What?! she had guns as big as steers...and shells as big as trees.

Hi Guys,

Jazz Masters' Paul Hardcastle has many great, "modeling", tunes.

A 2nd for the Victory at Sea entire album!

More Jazz tunes by Norman Brown, Acoustic Alchemy, Peter White. Smooth Jazz in general works well for me..recommended.

"Blue", by Eiffel65.

"Mr.Roboto", by Styx!

.......oh..almost forgot...the entire, "Pirates of the Carribean, curse of the Black Pearl", music soundtrack!

Very inspiring!

...to mention a few.....

faithfully submited, Tony Bunch

Hi

I MUST add one more song to a long list. While it is not a "sea going" song, this song would honor a galant ship and crew. In the book "Ship of Ghosts", Houston survivors reported that when the ABDA Naval force left port for it's last battle, men topside on Houston as they were passed by the H.M.S. Exeter, the ships p.a. was playing "A Hunting We Will Go" as they headed to sea. So much for British humor at the time, a moral boost for being hopelessly being outnumbered. That would be a fitting tribute for a fine ship and crew, all odds against them, but A hunting they did go for.

Since Led Zepplin was mentioned, I thought of the Robert Plant tune Ship of Fools.   It was played on the final episode of Miami Vice when Crocket and Tubs were stranded out on a boat.

I like talk radio because of the variety of topics and presentation styles. I don't  like all talk radio, but topics that deal with History,Medical subjects,Military and National Security issues ,so many interesting things to learn. My choice of music would be guitar , classical and steel string. At this time of year Christmas music is top on my list.

You guys all forgot an obvious one: "Sailing, sailing, over the bounding main..."Smile [:)]

"Sea of Love" by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs; also the Honeydrippers, that one-off project by Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck.

Speaking of Led Zeppelin, how about "Down by the Seaside," a lesser-played cut from Physical Graffiti. And of course, there's "The Ocean."

"Sail On" by The Commodores (a bit wimpy but it fits).

A one hit wonder called Every Mother's Son did a song called "Come on Down to My Boat."

"Ships" by Barry Manilow (another wimpy one but you won't find a title that's more to the point). And one more wimpy one, if you can hang in there: John Denver did a song about Jacque Cousteau's boat "Calypso."

If you're in a metal mood, "Children of the Sea" by Black Sabbath might be the best Ronnie James Dio-era Black Sabbath song. His own group Dio later did a little-known but absolutely marvelous song called "All the Fools Sailed Away."

Iron Maiden's epic (nearly 14 minutes long) "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." The live version on Live After Death really smokes! They also did a song called "Sea of Madness."

An obscure cut on Deep Purple's Burn album is called "Sail Away." After Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple, he formed his own band Rainbow and their song "Catch the Rainbow" on their debut album has a line about sailing away "on ships of wonder."

Ralph, I think I'd prefer to listen to one of those apalling 'wrap' singers (is 'singer' the correct term here?) all evening than five minutes of talk radio.  If radio it has to be then 60/70's rock will do fine.

As a lover of the Victorian Royal Navy, I have to suggest HMS Pinafore, by Gilbert and Sullivan!
