Draft marks?
Posted by onyxman on Thursday, December 7, 2006 11:12 AM

Does anyone know of a source for ship draft mark decals?

A couple of the models I built lately include the draft marks, but they are way out of scale. (eg, the Revell Glasgow)

Scale?

Gold Medal Models makes draft marks in 1:192

Iron Shipwright makes them in 1:192 and 1:350

(The real thing look better than the scans.  The flag's bars are not washed together and the detail is all there!)

and Hawk Graphics has some in the works

Thanks! I was hoping for 1/400, but that's a start.

Fred, i got one 1/350 Dragon Bunker Hill decal set, that you maybe can use.

 Mail me if you want me to send it to you.

Regards Hasse.

Thanks Hasse, but I think in this case I need to use the exact scale. After all, the draft is an exact indication of length. 1/350 on a 1/400 might be just too much difference. Though it's better than the decals supplied with the Glasgow, which are at least twice as big as they should be.

I might try making my own. Trouble is, my printer won't do white numerals on clear film. I might try creating white numerals on a background that matches the hull colors of the model, then print it on white film.  I'll let you know if I have any success.

If any after market decal maker is reading this, there could be a market for a sheet in various scales, Roman numerals and arabic, white, black, and metric and English.

I believe Micro-Mark makes a decal paper that will enable you to print white letters and numbers.

On second thought, if I am doing my math right, a 10 ft run of draft marks in 1/350 would differ from 1/400 by only .04 in. I guess I can live with that. I'll try to get one of those sheets from Iron Shipwright.

Using 1:350 scale items on a 1:400 scale model, they will appear 12.5 %  larger  [(400 - 350) / 400 :=  0.125].
