As smokinguns3 can atest I am working on this behemoth, and I researched for detail kits. No one has any available yet. So far all there is, is the figure set from CMK. If you want pics of the works in progress smokinguns3 and mine are in the revell-mongram GB

I have many of their products. The quality is outstanding. Their brass and resin products are truly superb. The only thing better than their brass and resin is their directions! WS

On December 20, 2006 I purchased two resin crew sets (3 figures each) for the Gato from AAA Hobies (aka Nautilus Modles) for $9.80 + tax each. They were make by CMK kits and numbered

F72175 and F72176.

A lot is planned and assumed, but not much yet: WEM has some deck guns listed, and a PE set of some kind, Nautilus is rumored to be working on a wood deck, but who knows? (No, really, who?? tell us!). Iron Bottom sound (http://ibs.eastcoastarmory.com/Csets2.htm) is working on guns and Balao tower converserion I think.

I am researching decks (the all wood deck boats vs mix wood metal), and am looking at doing a PE set of the metal decks to replace the kit, but that's just in research now...weighing pros and cons and do-ability.

The PDF of deck research is under "deck" forum at:

Somewhat on the topic...Does anyone know of any aftermarket accessories available (photo-etch or, preferably, a crew of 15+)? I have seen one 5-inch gun crew that looked cool. Eduard had nothing for it on the "Next 3 Months" products release page. I know its bound to happen, but "is available now" sounds way better. I head over heels into building this thing!

You did not understand the question........ Revell Germany is about to release a 1/72 scale Gato selling for US $91. I said nothing about German subs!

Does anyone HAVE info as to whether the molds will be the same, or as like many ship models its just a fancier box with more flash? Like many ship models from them.

A quick search on ebay or Tower hobbies and you will see what I mean.

Do you submarine guys know, for this kit????

The Gato is not evan close to being the same mold nun the less the gato is not made by revell germany its revell USA. The two german u boat hull's are some what identical but not identicaly the same. Hope that helps.

By the way, it's worth a visit to the Revell website, using your secret mission code in the gato section gives you access to a good interview with a veteren submarine sailor.

Current US submarines do not carry their names or numbers on the hull or sail when in operation. They carry two wooden plaques with their names in polished brass lettering for use in port during special occasions. These plaques are mounted at the top of the sail, below the conning station. On very rare occasions the subs will have their hull numbers painted on the sail for a limited time. Before the sub sails, the numbers are painted over and the plaques are stowed away in the captain's passageway.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

All US Subs had hull numbers on their sails from around 45-46 to the late 60s. The ship's name was, and, I believe, still is, worn port and starboard on the after hull.

Wait till you guys who haven't started your build yet discover they only furnish conning tower nubers for ONE side! Calling customer service only gets you evasive answers from their "experts". Floating Drydock has some nice number sets that do the trick at a reasonable price, and he sends you 2 sets.

Of course subs didn't carry any numbers on their conning towers operationally.  Maybe as as postwar training or reserve sub (or museum ship as seen today).

The Shipcamo site is your best bet, they are the US partner for paints to White Ensign Models (WEM). These guys THOROUGHLY research paint, then have it custom blended to their specs. I just bought a small tin of "Dark Gray" for my 1/72 Gato, as a test, and I was surprised to find it is very, very dark, especially compared to the Humbrol USN equiv I bought. So I'm glad I went to WEM.

I've seen some excellent U-boat builds and paint jobs, but some funny shades of gray because people used average grays. Worth the effort I think to use correct colors.

The 2-tone gray and black was Measure 32/(lots of variations in the slash part), popular in about 44, maybe starting 43, though it was chnaged in late 44/early45 slightly. Dick O'Kane noted that the new paint job (as opposed to the Measure 9 all black) was excellent camo, he and his lookouts couldn't see a rendezvousing sub until they were quite close, even in daylight.

Keep us posted on the build

1/72 Gato
Posted by ADleitch on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 5:53 AM

I am building the Revell Gato 1/72. Need FS numbers or colour matches for the 2 tone grey over black scheme. Revell just say Light ghost grey and light grey. Forgive me for not wanting to take them on their word.

Thanks in advance for the help.
