Neat things found while surfing
Posted by qmiester on Friday, January 12, 2007 7:40 PM
Spent last night wandering around the world on Google Maps (another example of how I spend too much time on the computor).  Anyway, I ended up in NW Russia and started checking the area out.  I found the Northern Fleet harbor about 40 miles NW of Murmansk and a very interesting site it was.  1 Aircraft Carrier, 12 Subs (including at least 2 Typhoons), couple of cruisers, some destroyers and a bunch of support ships and surface craft.  All in all rather neat.

Does anyone know how old the sattelite phots are on google maps? I looked at San Diego Harbor and the USS Midway is not there. I can see the USS Nimitz in port in the photo, but the USS Midway is missing.

Anywhere from 5 years ago to perhaps six months ago. Something tells me that Google isn't getting the most up to date images.

So long folks!

Thanks, I wa wondering because the copyright on the site says 2007, yet no USS Midway.

The copyright is for the images copied or saved from Google Earth, and is renewed yearly. I know that the scan of the town I live in was updated late last spring because I can see a tree that I had removed in the summer, and a pile of dirt I had delivered at the end of May, but the image didn't appear on Google Earth until the Fall. I'm pretty sure that the Government isn't going to allow Google to show real time images as that would be a security risk, like shampoo is on airplanes!

So long folks!

At least you can see details of your home. All I can see of mine is a very fuzzy out-of-focus image that shows some buildings demolished years ago. Just enter LA14 (postcode/zip) to see what I mean. I was looking at where my dad's cousin lives (Salmon Arm, BC) and can see much much more.
