BB-61, USS Iowa Measure 32 -- need ref's
Posted by jridge on Monday, January 29, 2007 1:59 PM

A NOOB ship builder needs help --- I am looking for painting instructions/illistrations of measure 32 for the USS Iowa, mid-late 1944.  I've surfed the net w/o any luck.

I am building the Tamiya 1/350 USS Missouri & Yankee Modelworks' USS Iowa resin conversion set. The Tamiya kit has painting illustrations of measure 32 for the USS Missouri.  But, the limited (small) images I can find on the 'net of the USS Iowa don't look anything like the Tamiya instructions.

Thank you in advance for bailing me out!!!!

The IOWA was in Measure 32a/1B during 1944 per the shipcamouflage.com database

http://shipcamouflage.com/usn_bb.htm

Unfortunately  there are no diagrams of this pattern at the Nautilus Models compendium of dazzle measures

http://nautilusmodels.com/camouflage.htm

However there is a starboard side diagram and a portside photograph of the Iowa in this measure at Navsource

You might look at the Gator's Mask link on www.modelwarships.com. This company makes painting masks for warships, warplanes, cars and other items. You will have to cut the mask from its backing and place it on your model. They show a 1/350 Missouri Measure 32/22d mask set in stock and will do special orders if you contact them.

Measure 32/22d is a quite different beastie than Ms 32a/1b.  32a/1b features soft-edges while the 32/22d features hard edges.    The patterns are not interchangeable.   Kenny Loup of Gator has been working on the patterns which are documented using the USNHC's information.  Is 32a/1b documented other than in photos?

I did not intend to imply that the two measures were the same, just that the Gator's site is the only site that I know of that creates maskings for warships, that they offer one for an Iowa class ship and that they are willing to create makes for ships that are not listed in their catalog. I pointed this out to JRidge as a source of information or a solution to his question of the measure used on the Iowa as I would find a commercially made mask better than one made by my amateur hands and I know of no other data sources.

Thanks for the help. VLAD at the model war ships forum had the information I was looking for ---- http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/reviews.html

I also learned another lesson.  It's called RID - Read the Instructions Dummy!  The Yankee Modelworks resin conversion instructions have a measure 32/1b layout.  But VLAD's is much higher quaility. Plus, he has a built-up of a 1/700 scale USS Iowa w measure 32/1b posted over there.

Thanks again.

Sorry to bother again..... But, I can't find anything with "Gator" or "mask" on the modelwarships site?

 Can you be more specific?

 TIA --- Jim

Jeez --- I never would have found that one.  I was looking on the "links" page.  I looked at every other page on their web site too.  The only thing I didn't do was scroll down the main page!

Thanks for the help......
