Question for the cognoscienti about Battle of Cape Esperance
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 5, 2007 9:25 PM

Do any of you informed gentlemen know how the ships on the two sides would have been painted at this major cruiser/destroyer battle during the Guadalcanal campaign?  I'm working on a project where I'll be painting every last ship (yup, them all), and it would be great if I got them right! Smile [:)]

So, anyhoo, here they are:

CA Aoba (0)
CA Kinugasa
CA Furutaka (+)
DD Fubuki (+)
DD Hatsuyuki

CA-38 San Francisco
CL-47 Boise
CA-25 Salt Lake City
CL-50 Helena
DD-491 Farenholt
DD-485 Duncan
DD-459 Laffey
DD-484 Buchanan
DD-488 McCalla

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

For the US side here's a start:

http://shipcamouflage.com/camouflage_database.htm

Check the database of camouflage measures applied to ships 1941 - 1945.

I believe that White Ensign Models sells a booklet which identifies the Japanese arsenal paint colors applied to their naval forces, broken down by time and unit.

One trusts that these will all be in 1/700 scale? That's a lot of ships.

I know that San Francisco and Laffey were both in overall 5-N, and I believe that Helena was as well.  Sorry, but I can't remember the numerical measure designation (I'm so bad at that, I have some sort of a mental block).  Farenholt was in an odd modified camo measure.  I have a picture of her in that scheme on my website:  http://www.devinjpoore.com/modeling.htm

Does anyone here have a color pic of what a ship would look like in Measure 21?  It seems amazing to me that many of these ships were medium blue with dark blue hulls!  Not sure how to represent that -- most of the cruisers seem to be in that scheme though.  The destroyers seem a mix of Measure 12 Mod and Measure 21.  Thanks.
