looking for pictures.....
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 12:50 PM
I have a question for all you Navy personal out there. I am getting prepaired to start work on two great ships, the USS Enterprise & the USS Missouri (sp?) sorry. Does anyone have pictures of details of these ships. Basically what I am looking for is hull stuff with the openings & etc, and then top side stuff. I am trying to make them as real as possible & it is hard to find good pictures.

If you do not have any pictures but know of any good reference material that would be helpful as well. You can email me at SF340_Driver@msn.com

Thank you

Which Enterprise? (See Enterprise or Hornet thread for possiblities)

As far as online photos, you can try NavSource.com, and the Naval Historical Center has online images.

If you can get books, I recommend Bob Sumerall's Iowa Class Battleships, Dulin and Garski's US Battleships of WW2, and Paul Stillwells' Battleship New Jersey (I know, not the Missouri, but a damn good reference for general information and fittings), and Norman Friedmans' US Battleships Illustrated Design History. The ultimate reference is Floating DryDock USS MIssouri Plans book, which has everything you need.

(from the website) **Snip**This 11x17 inch, 120 page book covers the USS MISSOURI BB63 as she appeared on Sept., 2, 1945. With over 100 external drawings and over 120 photographs, every detail of the ship is shown. All weapons, radars, equipment, hull lines, and other details are explained and shown in both drawings and photographs. This book is a must for the model builder of this famous battleship. Price $43.95 plus $5.25 shipping. **End Snip**

For the Enterprise CV-6, Classic Warships Pictorials on the Yorktown Class, Stefan Terzibastich (sp) book on US Carriers in WW2, and Norman Friedmans' US Carriers Illustrated Design History.

For CVN-65, Bert Kinzey's USS Enterprise Detail in Scale is a must have.

Off the top of my head, that's all I have. I'm sure there's other stuff out there aside from the usual Squadron Signal books.

Regards,

Paul Stillwell has got a book on Missouri, "Battleship Missouri" by Naval Institue Press, ISBN1-55750-780-5, I've got a copy. Detail operational history, lots of pictures. As for colour photo, there is this web site, hmmm... let me see, I have it at my work place. I'll post it when I get back to office.

The book Nosaj recommended (ISBN1-55750-780-5) is great. In appendix A it has a chronology based on the deck logs which will tell you the dates that she was in dry dock. In the reading it tells you what modifications were done. I'm researching my Big Mo right now. SF340_Driver have you decided if you’d like to replicate the ships attributes for a specific point in time? I’ve decided to try to reproduce Mo after she left Hunters Point Dry Dock on December 15 1944. That was the refit that they turned her into a flagship for Halsey. The switch to Seahawk planes and to measure 22 are the important changes if you want to stay historically accurate.

By the way, I have a question for Jeff Herne. Jeff, your web site has a couple of different series of ship plans available. Were you referring to the TFW series plans in your 18 Sep 2003 post? Also do you think any of the plans would indicate when modifications took place if they were completed after the ship was commissioned. Specifically, would the changes done during the period of Nov 28-Dec 15 1944 be reflected in the plans? I would really like to get my hands on those if I could tell when the changes were done. I would appreciate it if you could e-mail me at colovans2@comcast.net whenever you get the time.
Good luck on your projects guys.
