The closest color I have seen that matches the hull gray of US Navy ships is testors 1138 gray. ¼ oz bottles.

Trust me. Another detail I can give to if you want to make it more accurate is the fact that every day there is some BM baiting the side of the ship. So there is never an even gray paint tone all over the ship even when it is fresh out of the shipyards. The BM's paint the ships with rollers usually from the pier. I don't know exactly how this next thing happens. But you can tell when the BM's have painted because they cover the old gray paint that's applied in the yards with a sprayer. The original paint job starts to look somewhat pink over gray and its also lighter more pail. I think this might have something to do with the red primer used before they spray hull gray (haze gray) on the ship. The last ship built was the USS Barney. It was a 1/700

So I dint attempt this weathering method but I wanted to let you all know that.

I would love to snap some pics.  But I only go to the pier to move ordnance and the job keeps me busy. Plus there's the whole watch stander with the M-14, 9MM, hydra thingy I wont dare excite. My 2 cents [2c]
