PT-109
Posted by T-rex on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 1:39 PM

About a year ago i'd finished my Revell 1/72 PT-109, (the boat commanded by The John F. Kennedy). Since I saw that there was glue stain everywhere I did what I always do when theres a model thats pretty bad, paint it (is that a good idea?). There are four crew member on the boat but I don't know what coulour to paint them? I thought it was bright blue all over them except the life jacket and helmet(painted it olive green)  but I mit have done it wrong, also painted the boat olive green and below water line was flat gray, Is that the right coulour?

Coulour images would be good, Thank.

There are more authoritative experts in this Forum when it comes to uniforms, but I'll take a stab at it.

The standard U.S. Navy enlisted man's working uniform in World War II consisted of a light blue shirt and darker blue dungarees (i.e., blue jeans).    The officer's working uniform conisted of a khaki shirt, khaki pants, and a black necktie - though I doubt very much that the c/o of a PT boat in the Solomons wore his tie very often.  The navy helmet was painted a medium grey. Lifejackets could be found in several colors, but I suspect a dull, rather dark blue - about the same shade as the dungarees - would be most likely in this case.

The numerous PT boat experts here in the Forum may shoot me down; if so, by all means believe them rather than me.  But I think the above is about right.

If you do a forum search on the words "PT 109" you'll find a whole lot of extremely erudite posts regarding the boat's color scheme.  I won't even try to add to what's already been contributed on that subject.

Good luck.

Sign - Oops [#oops] sorry, Maybey i'm alittle too specifict on the subject, my PT boat is the largest scale boat I have and its very difficule to paint the figures and small scale boats like 1/700 scale, I think it nearly impossible. Well thank for the help.

Bye

Sir,
The 109 is said to have been either overall Navy Green or Tropical Green, with an Copperoyd colored bottom.  Copperoyd can be substituted with White Ensign Models' (even though this color was NEVER used on wooden hulls) Norfolk 65-A Anti-fouling Red.  Some former crew members have said that she remained in an overall grey ... but, I am of the school of thought that she wore Navy Green.
As for the uniforms worn by the crews - that other gentleman has  the right idea ...

There also something wrong with the stand of the boat, the instruction say "silver base except letters PT-109 is flat black, simbol of the PT-109 (which is a mosquito holding a torpedo) is navy blue" I did this scheme but it doesn't look good, the silver doesen't macht the ship color.

Is there another scheme (color combination)?

That's the logo for ALL PTs, not just PT-109.  It has blue water, white wavecrests, a silver torpedo and the mosquito (for mosquito boats) was grey, yellow wings black legs, black outline - or something to that effect.
