Need hanger deck photos for USS Nimitz
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 10:59 AM

Can anyone help me please. I am going to be starting on Trumpeters 1/350 scale Nimitz as a surprise gift for my father-in-law who served on the NImitz for a number of years. I would like to make it as detailed as possible so I intend to light the model inside and out. However I have been unable to locate good enough pics for the hanger deck. The 1/700 version of the kit comes with all the fire and bulkhead doors, and all the wall detail, but not the 1/350 version. If I intend on making it accurate, I'll have to scratchbuild all the details which is hard to do since I have no photos. Any help is appreciated.

Check out the link below and you will find a great site that deals with Nimitz class aircraft carriers.

http://www.carrierbuilders.net/

There are plenty of images of the real ships, plus models of the Nimitz class ships.

There is one model of the USS George Washington CVN 73 that is in the section called models in dry dock that you should check out it will give you some good ideas for the hanger deck on your model.

I am building the same model as you are and I am converting it to the USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72.

Do your research as there are so many inaccuracies with the Trumpeter 1/350 scale model of the USS Nimitz.

I have had to rebuild the island structure, side details on the sponsons and flight deck details.

Even if you do it as the USS Nimitz in its 1975 configureation, which the model is based on, it is still not correct.

Hope this helps you.

Regards,

Beau.

Thanks for the links for the web sites I'm sure they will come in handy. I checked out your Nimitz by the way, and I was very impressed with the work done, expecially the wear on the flight deck. I take it your not done yet though right? Thanks again.
