WW II Aircraft Carrier Deck
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 22, 2003 5:35 AM
Does anyone know of a manufacturer of photoetched WW II aircraft carrier deck tie down strips in 1/48th? I would like to build up a section of WW II carrier deck, specifically, USS Hancock, to display a 1/48th Tamiya F4U-1D and need the tie down strips.

I think Verlinden made a resin flight deck display base in 1.48 that included PE tie-downs.

Expensive, but nice.

I certainly appreciate the input. However, what I really want is the metal tie down strips. I plan on making the carrier deck out of bass wood, nothing looks like wood except wood, and was looking for an easy way to put down the tie down strips. I found a couple of articles in past issues of FSM and may have to go that route.
Thanks again for the information.

No one that I know of produces just the tie downs, BUT, I can easily talk to my good friend Tom Harrison of Tom's Modelworks about releasing a set. The artwork has already been done for 1/350 scale...

Dick:
Are you talking about just the rings that attach to the deck and that the straps tie to?
If so, try wrapping a small wire around another to make the rings. The wire you are wrapping should be the right gauge for your 1:48 rings, and you wrap this around one that is the right gauge for the diameter of your 1:48 ring.
Wrap the same number of turns as desired rings plus a few spares.
Cutting each wrap off individually equals one ring.

Sorry if you meant something else ...

Jeff:
I certainly would appreciate your friend putting out the tiedowns in 1/48th. From looking at the Tamiya Corsair kit it just begs to built up for a carrier deck diorama.
Bruce:
What I'm looking for are the metal strips which were laid down between wooden plank decking on WW II era U.S. carriers. They are kind of hard to describe, but the box art of the Tamiya F4U-1D shows a good example.

Ah, the light bulb lights!
Can you use a fine wire? Sorry but that's all I can come up with on this.
Good luck,

Dick,
The 1/48th scale photoetched WWII aircraft carrier tie downs are available through Flattops & More Hobbies. Contact me at rkeeler@reliable-net.net and I can get you more information.
These tie downs are 1/8" wide (six inches wide at scale) x 12" long x .010" thick photoetched brass and come in a package of eight.
