Italeri 1/35 German S-100

You can get a 1:36 scale S-100 model now by Tian Jie from the Scale Shipyard or Loyalhanna Dockyard - http://www.loyalhannadockyard.com/TJSCHNELLBOOT.htm .  I've got a build log going at RC Groups - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=652094 .  I suspect the price will be similar to their PT boat, maybe a little more expensive because of the hull length. 

Thanks for that Bob, but I don't mess with R/C stuff as I either get run over, chased, dive bombed, strafed, half drowned or electricuted. besides it looks like this kit has some major issues with parts and instructions/plans.

Much prefer the static stuff as it's pretty much inert! I guess I'll have to keep my nose to the modelling press hacks and wait it out! I must admit that the Elco 80' Boat is a great looking kit and I'm looking forwards to being able to drag it out from my stash and get going,

Just because I'm putting rc gear in doesn't mean every one has to.  The other option is a 1:32 scale hull and armored bridge from Micro Glass - http://www.microglass.net/products/p1052.html .  The hull comes with a decent set of plans.  You'll have to scratch build the rest of the items - like guns, stanchions, torpedoes, etc.

 

Thanks Bob for the link. I have thought about the miroglass stuff, but I think that my skills are not up to doing that hull justice. I think that I'll just wait for the Italeri kit to hit the shops.

Being mainly a fan of 1/72 to 1/250 scale, I've tried to avoid the even larger scales (for reasons of display/storage space!), but reading Lambert + Ross's "Allied Coastal Forces" book has persuaded me to buy a 1/35 Vosper 72' hull, which I will be using to scratchbuild a late-war Vosper MTB (like the one represented by the Airfix 1/72 kit). I may attempt to build this as a R/C model though I have no experience with the technical side of this.
I'll probably end up buying the Italeri Elco sooner or later too! I don't know if I'll be able to resist buying the 1/35 S-100 when it's out (I'm usually more interested in Allied subjects, but the S-boats are among my favourite WW2 small craft), though I may change my mind when I see the price tag :D

It's produced by a British company called Astec Mouldings. They mainly produce racing boats, plus a few fishing boats and tugs, but their catalogue also includes two 1/35 "semi-kits" (i.e basic hull, deck and structure mouldings, no fittings) for Vosper boats. One is a fairly accurate model of a post-war RAF rescue launch (ASRL), the other (the one I bought) is a "semi-scale" model of a WW2 RAF launch.

Both of these have the same hull, which is a fairly good representation of a 70' Vosper. Thes kits are made from vac-formed plastic, and building them as R/C would be quite tricky due to the hull being fairly thin and flimsy (compared to GRP, wood or injected styrene). I originally bought mine to build as a R/C model but have given up and decided to build a static model instead. I have very little experience with the technical side of R/C modelling, however - if you have more skill with this then you'd probably have more luck! (A Vosper MTB isn't really a good choice for a beginner to scratchbuild a working model - it has 3 props and 3 very small rudders)

I decided to build mine as a late-war 73' MTB due to the difficulty of building the raised "forecastle" found on the earlier 70' boats. This makes the hull scale about 1/36.5 but I don't think the scale difference will be too noticeable. (I apologise if my original post was misleading, but I didn't want to go into too much detail considering that it was just a brief comment!). I'm using Allied Coastal Forces (volume 2) by Lambert + Ross as reference.

Robbe does a 1/40 as well. There are about three or four buildup reviews on the web. Maybe more. Search under S-130 Robbe

Actually the models are totally different - totally different hulls - The Vosper ASRL is the accurate one the other is from a 1950's model boats plan. The 1950's one ships with plastic for formers to stiffen the hull but they are not necessary the hulls are stiffened once the deck is in place.

 

I am looking fro pics of the Vasper version. I have seen a fully RC'ed one that was really nicely finished but no camera ;).

I apologise if my description of your product was incorrect or unfair - when mentioning that it would be tricky to build them as R/C I should really have added the qualifier "for a novice like me"! You are also definitely right that adding the deck to the hull gives it much more structural strength + stiffness.

I know the ASRL hull isn't really accurate for a Vosper MTB, but it is close enough for me given that I'm on a fairly limited budget!

Getting close..............how come no one on any modelling forums has a neighbor / good friend that works for a plastic model manufacturer......you go to an auto forum and just about everyone knows someone in the auto industry somewhere!

Product Update: 1/35 Italeri S100 Schnellboot

As a follow on to the earlier news report of Kenny Loup on the 8th of February 2008 in regard to the Italeri release of its 1/35 Schnellboot S 100 German WW II Torpedo Boat . It has been announced that this kit is going to include over 450 plastic parts, 22 clear parts, two different diameters of rope and over 90 photo-etch parts. It will even come with a screwdriver to assist in assembly.

Check out that box art image its certainly dynamic and cannot fail to get the heartbeat racing.

The most exciting news is that it is now a reasonable assumption that the release of this kit is now very imminent as the Great Models Webstore have now announced that they are accepting pre-orders. The suggested retail price has been announced as US$249.95 however pre-orders are now being accepted at the Great Models website at a price of US $175.00

  What I am asking for is data/photos of the actual release,the Nuremberg shots are definitely a pre-production mock-up. With such a high parts count,and the wonderful moulding of the hull as seen on the Italeri site,we may see a real beauty on our hands. Rampant curiousity!!!!!!!!!!!!

My local distributor has confirmed in an email over the weekend that they'll have the S-100 in stock in early December for $166.67.
