Tamiya have recently announced a 1/350 kit of the I-400, though I have no idea of the planned release date. Knowing Tamiya, it should be a very good kit though a bit pricey compared to other manufacturers.

I've built the Nichimo I-19 submarine also, and IMHO, it's a good kit. I'd like to build another.

Hey just wondering if you have read Tom Clancy's "Submarine- A Giuded Tour Inside a Nuclear Warship" Because it is pretty interesting and full of SSN and SSBN facts and cool things.

Yeah man I know, kind of weird. No I am not a former SEAL but I prefer US military Modelling then any other. It is usually that way because all branch's of the armed force's can't co-operate because they are all competeing for who is better. But I like booth branch's... as the Marine Corps Hymn states:

"If the Army and the Navy Ever gaze on Heaven's scenes,

They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines."

So my guess is this really pisses them off...

Thanks for being inquisitive ur the first person to point that out.

Why would you use the USMC Motto in your signature and have the handle Navy SEAL?  Are you or were you a SEAL.. If so then you would know In real life the SEALs don't like the Marine Corps...not even a little.

 Just curious.

If you watch eBay the Nichimo I-19 submarine comes up pretty regularly, however it is popular and prices of around $50 for mint boxed examples are common.  I got mine for somewhat less as the box is (very) second rate.

It makes up into a nice size at 1:200, over 21" long.  The moulding is clean and the parts fit well.  Even the 'Glen' floatplane consists of nine parts.  Instructions are in Japanese but present no difficulties and contain additional information on rigging aerials and other items. It has facilities to motorise it but with the exception of the prop shafts this can be left out and even if fitted doesn't compromise the appearance of the vessel at all, as long as you don't use the screws that hold the centre deck down for access to the battery compartment.

Placed alongside Nichimo's 1:200 Type IXC U-Boat it gives a clear indication of just how big these Japanese submarines were, apparently this also made them poor performers under water and relatively easy targets to detect and destroy.

I-19's main claim to fame is that she apparently was responsible for sinking the carrier USS Wasp, seriously damaging battleship USS North Carolina, and mortally wounding destroyer USS O'Brien, with a single spread of torpedoes.

I bought mine in Yokosuka Japan back in 1976.

I note that it is listed as being available from Internet Hobbies.

From my stash:

The Nichimo 1/200 I-19

Not sure how easy it is to find these days, but from what I've seen of what is inside the box, it should build up to a pretty nice sub.

Aurora once had a Japanese Submarine w/float plane in their line of kits.  Don't know what scale it was (box scale I suspect) but it was 4 or 5 times bigger than a 1/700 kit.  It was typical Aurora for it's time but I understand the outline was fairly accurate.  Every once in a while you see one on Evilbay.

PitRoad of Japan makes several 1:700 scale styrene aircraft-carrying submarine kits

Kit W16  I-9 & Ro-35

Kit W41 I-13/I-14

Kit W48  I-400/I-401

In the States these are probably most available from Pacific Front Hobbies
