Yes, the sails are about the only thing the helmsman would have seen through an opening in the bulkhead in front of him. I presume the glass is a modern addition.

Whipstaff would sound just right ! Thanks,

Julian

Excellent photo's Julian, I really must find the time to cross the water and have a look at the amazing maritime exhibits in Holland.

The ships wheel does look awfully incongruous perched where it is.

I think the English word you are looking for is 'whipstaff' for the steering mechanism.

Would the helmsman have had a view of the sails on this particular ship thro' perhaps a small port cut into the bulwark at head level.

Here some photo's of the Batavia:

Stern view with crest of Amsterdam in a prominent position.

Portside looking from stern towards the bows.I just love that golden brown colour.

Portside view of bow and beakhead.

View towards the quarterdeck. The wheel was added for the trip to Australia where they really sailed the Batavia. Looks awfully out of place though. The steering on the Batavia was done using a "Kolderstok" and I am stumped for the translation here. Maybe John T. can help here.

Looking forward from underneath the quarterdeck towards the focsle.

This little guy can be seen looking through a port on the starboard side of the ship in the photo in the "not like the Constitution" thread. His "Job" was to keep an eye on the helmsman and stop him from falling asleep or drifting off course.

More to come...........................

Julian
