HMS Dreadnought Question.

Caught the show on Thursday or Friday during the day on the History International Channel. The show Voyages often depicts ships on the high seas. This one had to do with the Battleships and their too brief history. I noticed that on the side of the Dreadnought there were diaganol lines on the side of the hull. Were those staircases or support beams. If they were stairs, why so many?
