1/1200 RMS Titanic (Revell kit)
Posted by EPinniger on Sunday, April 29, 2007 7:14 AM
As promised, here are some photos of my 1/1200 scale RMS Titanic, built from the Revell 1/1200 kit:

I built the kit "out of the box" other than replacing the crane cables with fine metal wire and adding simple "shrouds" to the masts from the same material. As I built this model on holiday, I had limited access to materials and reference - if not, I'd have made a few more additions and improvements, including ladders and steps made from PE scrap and vents made from bent styrene rod or brass wire.

I plan on building Revell's Queen Elizabeth II in the same scale soon, though not the Aida, as modern cruise ships don't really appeal to me much. Has anyone here built the QE2 kit - how does it compare to the Titanic? Is it also a full-hull model?

The Revell kit is a relatively recent issue, dating to the late 1990s. It is a full hull model, whilst there aren't many parts in the kit and many of the details are crude or overscale (most noticeably the ladders on the funnels), it does not look too bad when built. Painting is tricky as all the deck fittings are moulded onto the deck. You do get a nicely-printed decal sheet which includes in-scale lettering for the bow and stern, though.
The finished model is about 22cm long. The 5p coin in the first photo gives an idea of size (it's about the size of a US dime)

Nice looking build, Ed, especially at that scale. I thought 1/700 was small until my daughter tackled the Aida cruise ship you mentioned (and you have to admit, those eye and lip decals are wayyyyy cool). But she buckled down and painted all the molded-in deck chairs, and the swimming pools looked pretty good, painted sky blue and filled with Future. I was pondering this Titanic as maybe part of a mini-diorama or display
