I need help finding 1/4" dia. styrene disks
Posted by oldmodeler on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 10:16 AM

Does anybody know of a source for solid plastic disks? I need two that are .250" dia by anywhere from 0.015" to 0.025" thick.

Thanks,

Ed

why not cut them out of sheet plastic if you have some. i did that for 8 barbetts for the twin 5" turrets on my uss pennsylvania of 44-45. used a compass, a knife & fine sandpaper.

Try a paper punch.   It is quite easy to punch some holes out of Evergreen stock.   Various sized & shaped punches available at the local craft store

Just a thought but I have used a hole punch to make discs from thin plastic sheet. My own paper punch  produces discs of 0.25" diameter.

Worth as try.

Go to the hardware store or your local hobby shop and buy a 9/32" brass tube.

File or sand the outside diameter till you have a nice cutting edge to the inside. Then press this down on your styrene sheeet and carefully spin it back and forth till it cuts through.

 Perfect 1/4" diameter styrene disc.

I would have replied earlier, but did not have my password with me.  Anyway, you could also try using a hollow punch, of the kind that you hammer.

Cheers,

vonB.

I'm glad it worked for you.

It seems that often modelers look for fancy tools that they might think will be faster or better (dang the expense), but they forget the old tried and true methods.

I often need to cut plastic disks of various sizes.   I'll pull out my old trusty bow compass (remember those from high school geometry?) with two pin points.  I'll set in the desired radius and swing the circle on some Evergreen sheet stock.   One or two passes will cut thin stock.  Thicker stock may take a bit more effort: score snap, sand.

Remember the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Stupid.
