The big loops look more like a signal or identification (IFF) device rather than a RDF antenna.

Look at image 32 there are several ships with the large loops on the fore masts -- as in members of the same squadron.   If you go later int he series there are groups with triangles in the masts

Don't really have an idea about the semicircle device.   It too may be an ID device.  Look at my second picture.  The semi-circle is inverted on some and on others it is a full circle.  Toward the end of the series there are several pics with an X shape and inverted V on the aft mast

Torpedoboat question
Posted by gregbale on Monday, May 28, 2007 8:29 AM

I refer you to an absolutely stunning gallery of 227 photos of torpedoboat operations by the Kaiser's navy in WW1:

 http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/gallery/Halbflotille-XI/p08_e

Regarding this specific photo, and as one who has modeled warships but never served on one, my question is this:  What are the circular devices on the mainmast above the stack (and the semi-circular device on the aft mast, presumably)? Are they RDF of some sort?

Thanks in advance.
