Wanted a used dual action airbrush
Posted by Tug Guy on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 7:40 AM

I keep looking for a new airbrush. Looking at the prices for a dual action brush I wondered if anyone had one that they no longer used that might be less costly?

Why would you want a used one, when you can get a new one for as little as $40.00 from Model Expo?

See:

I bought two of these when they were going for $20.00 at Harbor Tool (they discontinued them) and they work as fine as the Badger that they are patterned after.

One very nice feature is the propellent can adaptor that is nice to use for touch-ups (I get the Testors air-brush propellent at Wal-Mart), or if you are going to spray something nasty smelling, like lacquers or enamels, and don't feel like hauling your compressor outside (I mainly use acrylics, so I can spray indoors, since the best overall solvent is a mixture of window cleaner and alcohol, which no one objects to).

No only that, this model has the smaller thread on the air fitting that is compatible with Harbor Tools various air hoses and such as the kind that they have with the quick-disconnect fitting.

The main thing you gotta watch is the tiny brass fitting at the bottom of the air hook-up, as it will unscrew as you dinconnect and reconnect various air hoses (I used a drop of Loctite Threadlock to keep mine in place).

OK?

Thanks for the link and information. I wouldn't have thought of looking at their site for an air brush. I had searched several airbrush  sites and found them to be relatively priced. I saw the one Harbor Freight offers it is the single action. I will give this a try for $40 what do you really have to lose?

Well, if this is the one you are referring to:

It is a $10.00 model going for $3.99 at this time at Harbor Tool, and I have had for years, and have found it a great brush for most of the spraying I do anyway, as well as being easy to take-apart and clean. For some reason, it is less expensive and unlike the similar Testors model at Wal-Mart, it has brass metal parts instead of having an all-plastic nozzle.

From my experience, it is a great brush.

For that price, I got two more of them for spraying acrylics, along with the quick-disconnect adaptor hoses, and so if one clogs in use, I just swap to the clean one and keep on going to finish my job. It seems that the acrylics tend to build up in the little brass cone, even after a thorough flush, so I just take it apart (it pops apart easily) and put the metal pieces in some acetone-based fingernail polish remover while using the second one. In the spare's spray bottle, I keep some polish remover for a flush when I am finished brushing.

In fact, I am going to pick up a third one, and use it for special enamel and lacquer applications only. For the price, the spare mixing jar and spray bottle make it worth the $4.00 alone.

Our Wal-Marts doesn't carry anything Testor related. It is like they are unaware model kits exist. Be glad your does have items like this. And yes the price of the bottles are worth the $4.00. Not to mention you have a spare to finish up in case of an emergency.

Them literally being the closest store to my house (I lived in the area before the store was built) I happily buy my propellent there for $10.00/can as well as miscellaneous items all the time. I even buy a kit there now and again. Wink [;)]

Paasche now offers essentialy the same air brush at Hobby Lobby, except the handle is molded in red instead of black plastic, and for some reason they do not throw in the propellent can adaptor as with the Harbor Tool model, and it lists for $20.00 to make up for it.  Confused [%-)]

By the way, the only problem I run into with this model it that the metal air hose fitting pops out of the plastic brush body now and then.

When that happens, I "swap burshes" with a spare, and when I clean up the brush later, I mix some 5 Minute Epoxy and glue it and the handle tip (sometimes they can pull out easily) back into place.
