posting photos of your work?
Posted by Zellars on Monday, July 2, 2007 4:46 AM

I have been scratch building a US destroyer USS Zellars DD-777 FRAM II, and would like to post some pictures of my work and get some feed back from some of you fellow modelers. I am not done with the model it is still work in progress. I have been working on it for about a year now and lately I have been applying deck fittings.

The ships scale is 1:192 (1/16"=1'). I am using plans from the USS Allan Sumner and USS Laffey as a guide as well as the book Sumner-Gearing class destroyers by Robert Sumerall and recently I just aquired the Sumner-Gearing e-book from the Floating Drydock.

I don't see anywhere to upload photos. Are there any rules about posting photos of your work?

Can't wait to see your build.  My Dad was Gunnery Chief on Forrest Royal (DD-872) and on Chandler (DD 717) and when I was growing up I had the opportunity to walk the decks of many a Gearing, including Zellars.  I believe Zellars was one of the last surviving Gearings and was in the Iranian Navy under the Shah as Badr.  After the Ayatollah took over, it was left to rust at the dock and may have been recently broken up for scrap.

I have lots of Gearing photos and a couple cruise books ... one is the Royal's Korean War tour.

MBT70

Actually the Zellars was an Allan Sumner Class.  The Zellars was sold to the Iran Navy in 1971, I think there is even a web site if you look for it.

This is my first scratch built ship. I decided to build her because my brother Ralph served aboard from 1961-63 and was part of the Cuban Blockade. It really sad to think it might have been scrapped. The Zellars has a long and distinquished career including being hit by a kamakzi in WWII.

I need to set up a URL for my pics. Then I can post them.

Zellars,

I reported aboard USS Lowry DD-770, a FRAM II Sumner, the day she returned to Norfolk, Va. from the Cuban Blockade. I would be very much interest in seeing your pics. Ships of the mid 60's era don't seem to get a whole lot of attention, and have been pretty much ignored by the Plastic kit manufacturers. You mentioned USS Laffey. I was at a crew reunion for Lowry, in Charleston, S.C., and went aboard Laffey, at Patriots Point. It had been almost 40 years since I had walked the deck of a Sumner clas DD.....My feet hit that deck, and it was the mid 60's again. I guess "riding a bicycle" isn't the only thing you never forget. This is a 1/700 Allen M. Sumner, That I am modifying to a FRAM II.

Beautiful work sumpter250. I can't imagine working at 1/700! I thought 1/192 was tough!

I am getting my photos uploaded so I can post them, so you should see some pretty soon.

Thanks! I actually intended the 1:700 to be a "test run", as I would like to model her in 1:87 scale, about 52" in length. I put that idea away, when I got the 1:700 USS Randolph, to go with her.

Your model is coming along very nicely! Sweet!! 1:192 scratch !! Wow, you are going to have to do some serious casting for all the repeated details,(chocks,bollards,cleats,W.T.doors,and dogs, port lights, P250 pumps, potato lockers, etc. etc. etc.) You mentioned plans. May I ask where you got them? Do they include drawings for the Variable Depth Sonar ( VDS ) array on the fantail? Do they aslo include dimensions for the covered trough on the DASH flight deck, for the Kingpost of the aft refuelling station? OK, I got carried away. It's good to see someone else doing a FRAM II !

I got my drawings of the USS Laffey from the Floating Drydock and the drawings for the USS Allan Sumner I got online from the DD-692 web site. These drawings consists of outboard and inboard details, deck plans and general arrangement of equipment and weapons. They are copies of course of original Naval drawings.

I purchased some etchings from Toms Model Works of the railings and vertical ladders. Anchor chains and chocks I got from BlueJacket Shipcrafters. Evrything else is scratch.  I have never done any casting work so many of the fittings are hand crafted as well.

I did see that Toms Model Works has W.T.Doors and are probably well worth it. I just wish I had known sooner.

I set up a special web page for my brothers so they could see my progress. Feel free to check it out http://www.howefamily.com/zellars_progress_photos/zellars.asp
