The Great Lakers Modeling Association has a list of kits that are available. Iron Shipwright has two resin models of the FITZ; 1:350 scale is $250; and 1:700 scale is $75.
Depending on what your definition of Great Lakes ships is, you're not limited to merchant or Coast Guard vessels. There were 28 GATO/BALAO class subs built at Manitowoc, WI during the war. Pullman Standard (Railroad) Car Company in Chicago built PCE/s. DaFoe Shipbuilding in Michigan built escort ships. Peterson Brothers in Sturgeon Bay, WI has built minesweepers.

Iron Shipwright makes the Edmund Fitzgerald in both 1:700 and 1:350
ISW also makes a 1:700 scale whale-back ore carrier from the late 1800s as the john Ericsson

Walthers, Walthers, Walthers......hmmm I'm not choking. Oh!, I am a model railroader, so I must be immune. Sylvan Scale Models has an HO ( 1:87 ) scale Great Lakes Tug, and they have recently announced the release of a Great Lakes Freighter. As I remember it would be somewhere around 140 scale feet...about 17" long. It is a resin kit. Go to, http://www.isp.on.ca/Sylvan/
Lead me not into temptation ..................I can find it myself

Didnt Shep Paine build the Sable?
Or maybe some of the aircraft for it, cant remember. I think it was 72nd scale and beautiful.
I'll have to dig up the old FSM mag and read about it again.
