BWN USS Massachusetts
Posted by cruichin on Sunday, July 29, 2007 1:36 PM

Hi All,

I posted this in the Painting forum, but I figured this might be better.

I've started building a BWN USS Massachusetts. I cleaned the hull with detergent and with Isopropyl alcohol. I put a base coat of Mr. Surfacer 1000 as a primer, but it will not adhere. I then tried a coat of WEM Navy Blue and Haze Grey - neither would adhere. I then put a Dullcote on the bare hull, as well as a sealer on top of the previous paint. Still no adherence.

I brush painted and airbrushed to see if it made a difference - no luck.

I'm stumped, anyone have any ideas?

Try Westley's Bleche White white-sidewall tire cleaner from the local auto supply store.  Iy is a higher cleaner/degreaser than most home soaps.  Even denatured alcohol won't cut some mold release compounds.

Rinse well and allow to air dry.   Then prime with an automotive primer such as Plasticote

When using the Westlys you might want to wear gloves. It has a nasty smell to it that will linger on your fingers. I used to use this stuff a lot when I had my collection of '50s Chryslers and Imperials with those WIDE white wall tires....WS

Thanks, guys, I'll give this a try. Will this stuff strip the paint that is already on the hull or should I strip it first?

Hi Ed and Dreadnought,

I stripped the old paint from the hull, cleaned it with the Westleys, primed it with auto paint, and the finish coats are adhering. Thanks!
