Revell North Carolina
Posted by ww2modeler on Sunday, July 29, 2007 2:18 PM

Is the Revell kit of the Nort Carolina any good, I recently went there over vacation and got a book and set of palns for the ship. Also, on the box, I couldn't find the scale. I'm guessing maybe 1/570 or maybe 1/700. Any help appreciated. And, if you want I can take some pics of the plans and camo guides in the book for reference.

On the bench:

1/35 Tamiya M26 Pershing-0%

1/144 Minicraft P-38J Lightning-50%

Numerous 1/35 scale figures in various stages if completion.

it scales out to be about 1/580th  but the 1/570th is close enough

unless there is an expensive resin kit out there  it is about the only game in town

if you maybe drill out the big guns  add some p/e 1/600th scale railing some chain and some rigging thread   etc..

it will be  OK

The 1:700 scale kit produced by the PitRoad/Trumpeter consortiuum (marketed by Trumpeter in the States and PitRoad in the Orient) is by far the best small scale plastic North Carolina available.   Not to be confused with the 1:350 scale NC by Trumpeter which is rife with errors & fit problems.

Perhaps the best small resin kit of the North Carolina is the Regia Marina kit out of Italy

I would like to second Ed's recommendation of the Trumpeter 1/700 North Carolina. It is indeed a very nice kit, much better than the Revell kit in the bizarre box scale. The deck detail is outstanding as is most of the rest of the kit. Some might quibble over the 20mm guns or 50 cals or whatever it is they are supposed to be at the time frame that you build the kit but at that size I can't see busting a gut over it. The only other kit out there not mentioned was the old HORRIBLE Aoshima kit (old Waterline No. 105) which was so bad as to be almost laughable.

If you want to super detail any of the kits the Trumpeter 1/700 kit is the way to go. There is plenty of PE out there that will work for it and you won't have to settle for out of scale or mis-matched components to make the old Revell kit work.

A lot of "ink" has been spilt over the problems with the Trumpeter 1/350 kit as well. I don't think all of the beat up on it will make one iota of difference to the average modeler trying to make a large scale model of the NC. When you are done with it, it will look like the ship. Fit problems plague almost every ship model and have to be dealt with, it is part of the process. Yes, it could have been better, it could also have been worse. If you want to build a NC in 1/350 go with it and buy yourself a good PE detail set and be happy, the kits certainly sell cheap enough now. They are around the same price point as a lot of 1/700 kits or less!

Thanks for the help, you talked me outta the Revell kit so I'm leaning towards the Trumpeter 1/350 because A, I have the plans for it in 1/350 and B, I think the tiny 1/700 kits are a pain to attach all the small things. And prefer to build in larger scales unless theres no other option. Thanks for the help. Question though. Do you'all have any special tools or reccomendations for the 1/700 kits as to attaching all the small guns and painting them.I'm working on my Tamiya KG5 and just got to the "fun" part. I'm mostly 1/35 Armor and 1/72,1/48 A/C guy.

As far as painting in 1/700 I prefer to work in subassemblies just like in the larger scale. Make each subassembly a kit in and of itself. 000 brushes will become your friends as well as 0 and 1 chisel ended brushes. As to tools the one I find most useful is a set of tweezers I modified myself, a cheap set of Pakistani stainless tweezers about 2mm wide at the end to which I glued on the inside a thin strip of soft rubber to each inside surface. With that I am able to grasp the parts without them winging off into space and the jaws of the carpet monster.
