Cutty Sark Plans & "Spy Glass"
Posted by BigJim on Thursday, August 2, 2007 7:20 AM

A couple of things to share with you all;

   In reading many of the threads lately about sailing ships, in particular the Cutty Sark, it has been mentioned several times, by mr. jtilley, about a great set of plans that were available from the Cutty Sark Gift Shop. While I am definately not ready to tackle a Cutty Sark model, I do have a thing for blueprints/plans and since you never know how long something like this will be around, I ordered the 3 sheet set.
   Let me say this, they are everything that Mr. Tilley said they were. I ordered them on July 14th and they were here on my desk in the states yesterday (Aug. 1) when I came home. They came rolled in a tube, so there are no creases in the plans. Cutty Sark fanatics, you will not be disappointed!

   Mr. Tilley also noted that there would be some small writing on the plans that my be hard for us with less than stellar vision to see. For that I have the following solution. I can't remember who gave me this "Spy Glass" and I can't tell you where you can find your own, but, it works real well.
   Obviously, it came from some Drug Rep. and even though my son-in-law is one, he hasn't been able to find me another spy glass. As you can see it has a cm scale for those of you that work in metrics.
   If any of you have an interest in this thing and can find a source, please let me know too. I have a few friends that would like to have one too.

Wow, I want one too, even though my vision is still perfect, one never knows what the future might bring, but having a ruler at the same time, that's great.

These are called dome magnifiers and they come in glass and acrylic.  They are used for maps and photos as well as other documents but more interestingly, for looking at fingerprints at a crime scene, doing skin examinations, and for poeple with certain kinds of visual disorders.  Try these links, I'm sure there are more.

These don't have the scale but one could be printed in reverse on clear 'stickyback' and placed on the bottom of the dome.

Good luck on finding the real thing.

Thanks for the link Sauron. That first link appears to be almost the same as the one that I have.
