I can't remember ... you're doing the 1/350 Tamiya kit, correct?

What about just getting a long piece of corrugated cardboard from a box? You can rough out the hole and then use props to hold it at the correct waterline level as you fine tune the hole. If the cardboard sags too much, staple it to a couple of lengths of 1x2 furring strips or the like to make sure it stays horizontal from side to side.

I'm working on an idea i had for a dio of my enterprise, but i need to make a pretty precise copy of the hull at the water line.So i'm asking for any suggestions on how to do this? I've already cut a wood board to about 2 inches longer than the hull and marked drill holes every 1/4 inch along the board, but then i found out that the nails i was going to slide in the holes to copy the hull all the way down are to short for the vow. You're probably saying use longer nails idiot. But if i go with a longer nail i wont be able to drill the holes that close together because the diameter of the nail would be to great. All help is greatly appreciated
